This position is part of the U.S. Department of the Interior, focusing on the preservation and protection of national parks and historical sites.

Key Responsibilities

Standard Duties for Conservation Officer:

  • Uphold federal regulations, guidelines, and policies.
  • Conduct patrols across both developed and wilderness areas.
  • Respond to emergencies utilizing established protocols, including medical assistance, search and rescue operations, and fire suppression.
  • Promote visitor engagement and education; manage wilderness areas; enforce boundaries; safeguard natural and cultural assets (such as wildlife, flora, archaeological sites, and historic structures). Actively work to prevent any degradation of park resources.
  • Assist in initial investigations of criminal activities, violations of park regulations, public safety concerns, and vehicular incidents.
  • Manage crowd control during events.
  • Actively work to prevent any degradation of park resources.
Additional Responsibilities for GS-7 Level: Independently carry out investigations into minor infractions. Under the guidance of senior law enforcement personnel, investigate serious offenses and fatalities.

Employment Conditions

  • Successful completion of the Physical Efficiency Battery (PEB) is required prior to the start date.
  • A pre-employment medical examination and drug screening are mandatory.
  • Occupancy of government housing may be necessary.
  • Government housing may be available but is not guaranteed; inquiries should be directed to specific parks.
  • Uniform compliance with National Park Service standards is required, and a uniform allowance will be provided.
  • Availability for on-call duties, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and overtime, may be necessary.
  • Operation of a government or private vehicle may be required as part of official duties. Applicants must certify possession of a valid State driver's license and provide necessary documentation.

Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement unless otherwise specified.

Mandatory Requirements for Conservation Officer:

  • Minimum Age Requirement: Applicants must be at least 21 years old.
  • Law Enforcement Commission: Applicants must meet specific criteria related to law enforcement commission by the entrance-on-duty date.
  • Physical Efficiency Battery (PEB): Applicants must successfully complete the PEB, which includes various physical fitness assessments.

Selective Placement Factors:

Applications will be reviewed for the Conservation Officer position without EMT or Emergency Medical Responder certifications. However, these certifications are additional qualifications that may be required for certain parks.

Specialized Experience and Education:

To qualify for this position, candidates must possess relevant specialized experience or education that aligns with the responsibilities outlined above.

ICTAP/CTAP Statement: Current surplus and former displaced Federal employees with special priority selection rights must meet specific qualifications to receive consideration for this position.

Education:
