POSITION DESCRIPTION

QUALIFYING CHARACTERISTICS

The ideal candidate for the Transportation Coordinator position will be a highly organized and detail-oriented professional with a strong commitment to safety and efficiency. They should possess excellent leadership and communication skills, enabling them to effectively manage a diverse team and coordinate with various stakeholders. A thorough understanding of transportation regulations and compliance is essential, along with the ability to handle accident investigations and ensure proper maintenance of the fleet. The candidate should be proactive, with strong problem-solving abilities, and capable of making timely decisions, especially during inclement weather. Additionally, they should demonstrate fiscal responsibility, be adept at budgeting, and maintain accurate cost records. A passion for student safety and a dedication to continuous improvement in transportation services are key traits for success in this role.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES

  • Supervise general maintenance program for a fleet of 12 buses, with specific attention to safety inspections.

  • Implement procedures to ensure the adequacy of the maintenance phase of the safety programs.

  • Establish performance standards and supervise operational care, service, and maintenance of all vehicles within the department.

  • Provide information about the fleet leading to the purchase of new vehicles and declare vehicles surplus.

  • Conduct accident investigations and supervise accident report delivery to appropriate law enforcement and insurance agencies.

  • Ensure compliance with the codes and pertinent policies regarding training, licensing, registration, and operational permits.

  • Keep abreast of laws and State of Georgia policies regarding bus transportation and the safe transport of students.

  • Recruit, recommend for employment, and evaluate transportation department personnel.

  • Manage bus drivers, including scheduling drivers for all regular routes, athletic events, field trips, and summer camps.

  • Ensure substitute coverage for all emergency driver absences.

  • Arrange for special transportation for special events, including arrangements through a charter bus company.

  • Evaluate and monitor charter bus vendors.

  • Provide for safety at all bus stops.

  • Provide instruction in behavior management of all students.

  • Provide for a pool of adequately trained and informed substitute bus drivers.

  • Check school bus specifications, to meet the needs of the division and fully comply with state and federal regulations.

  • Recommend procurement of additional or replacement buses and disposal of old or uneconomical units.

  • Maintain appropriate communication with school leaders, parents, students and faculty.

  • Assist in the development of the transportation department budget and administer the expenditure of funds as allocated.

  • Assist in the development of all regular bus routes, schedules and stops. Develop route maps for drivers, schools, etc. as appropriate.

  • Maintain cost accounting records.

  • Collect data and develop all required school bus transportation-oriented reports and ensure their submission on a timely basis.

  • Coordinate student transportation activities with school officials, department heads and other interested groups or individuals.

  • Participate along with school officials in parent/student conferences in an effort to resolve or prevent misconduct and unsafe conditions, which involve the transportation system.

  • Conduct continuing bus driver training and traffic safety programs.

  • Arrange bus driver training for newly hired CDL drivers.

  • Evaluate all elements of the transportation program on a continuing basis.

  • Evaluate the safety of road conditions during inclement weather and provide timely information to the Director of Facilities and Assistant Head of School for Operations.

  • Provide for appropriate fiscal management, according to law and policy, of all allotted funds.

  • Comply with and support school and division regulations and policies.

  • Attend in-service training to improve skills, attitudes, and knowledge of school-related transportation and student control.

  • Model non-discriminatory practices in all activities.

  • Performs related duties as assigned by the Director of Facilities in accordance with school policies and practices.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS

The candidate must possess a high school diploma or GED and hold a current CDL license with the School endorsement. The candidate must meet school bus driver certification requirements. Ideally, the candidate will have knowledge of auto mechanics and 5-plus years of experience managing a fleet of buses or similarly sized vehicles. The candidate must have proficiency with technology including word processing, spreadsheets, email, and calendaring systems.

The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently list and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
