Lumber Quality Inspector and Kiln Technician

Reports to: 1. Yard Lieutenant 2. Yard Manager
SUBORDINATES: All personnel operating on the trading floor.
Job Overview of Lumber Quality Inspector: Under the guidance of the Production Supervisor and receiving direction from the Lead Hand/Supervisor, the Lumber Quality Inspector is tasked with evaluating lumber based on established criteria. Utilizing a thorough understanding of the company’s offerings, the Inspector assesses materials for imperfections, which may encompass knots, discolorations, decay, splits, and flawed milling, employing both visual and mechanical inspection techniques.
Additionally, the Inspector is expected to acquire skills to operate the kiln, providing support to the kiln operator as needed and ensuring continuity of kiln operations in their absence.
Key Responsibilities of Lumber Quality Inspector:
- Familiarizes with OSHA regulations pertinent to the designated work area and ensures compliance.
- Maintains awareness of all identified hazards.
- Ensures proper use, regular inspection, and maintenance of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) by all team members under their supervision, including but not limited to:
- Safety Glasses
- Safety Vests
- Gloves
- Steel Toe Boots
- Grades and measures lumber, conducting moisture assessments to determine grade board footage.
- Maintains grading equipment in optimal condition.
- Monitors production levels and communicates findings to the yard manager.
- Interprets and comprehends production lists.
- Operates machinery in accordance with established safety protocols.
- Utilizes calipers effectively for lumber grading.
- Collaborates closely with quality control and operations teams regarding lumber quality.
- Ensures the lumber area and yard are organized and well-maintained, which includes lifting, carrying, and stacking various types and sizes of materials.
Qualifications & Requirements of Lumber Quality Inspector:
- All hiring decisions are contingent upon successful completion of background checks and drug screenings.
- Prior grading experience is preferred, although on-the-job training is available.
- Completion of in-house grading training is required.
- Possesses a comprehensive understanding of lumber grades and defects.
- Familiar with grading rule materials.
- Exhibits strong computer and mechanical troubleshooting capabilities.
- Knowledge of SPIB & NHLA grading standards or equivalent is essential.
- This is a safety-sensitive role requiring the ability to lift up to 50 lbs, engage in walking, climbing stairs, pushing, pulling, repetitive motions, kneeling, squatting, and balancing, with exposure to loud noises and dust.
- Must foster positive working relationships with colleagues.
- Must maintain open communication with the Yard Manager and Yard Lieutenant.
