Role Summary

The Middle School Counselor plays a pivotal role in delivering mental health services to students facing academic challenges, social/mental health issues, or special education needs. This position involves collaborating with school staff to enhance the mental health framework of the institution and support overall student achievement. A strong understanding of social-emotional well-being and culturally responsive practices is essential when engaging with a diverse student body. The counselor is expected to uphold professional standards and maintain confidentiality in accordance with applicable laws and organizational policies.

Key Responsibilities:

Support for Students:

  • Devote approximately 80% of time to direct student services, including preventive and culturally responsive interventions, while allocating the remaining time to program development and management.
  • Conduct individual and group counseling sessions for students and their families.
  • Provide crisis intervention as necessary.
  • Document and track student interactions and counseling schedules effectively.
  • Assist students in setting and achieving personal and academic goals.
  • Collaborate daily with educators and staff to address student needs.
  • Develop a comprehensive plan for the effective delivery of counseling services aligned with annual student achievement objectives.

  • Work collaboratively with the school team and across AMPS.
  • Facilitate training sessions on counseling topics to support student success.
  • Contribute to the development of a positive school culture that meets the needs of students, families, and staff.
  • Participate actively in staff meetings and maintain open communication with colleagues.
  • Build positive relationships with students and their families.
  • Ensure a safe and supportive environment during counseling sessions.
  • Uphold and promote the school's values and policies.
  • Assist school leadership in addressing disciplinary matters.
  • Consult with administration to create effective interventions for students exhibiting challenging behaviors.

Preventative and Responsive Services:

  • Design and implement a comprehensive guidance curriculum.
  • Initiate individual and group counseling sessions addressing academic, social, and personal concerns.
  • Engage with families and staff to assess student needs and recommend educational options.
  • Coordinate classroom guidance sessions to enhance competencies in academic achievement, career development, and personal growth.
  • Assess student needs and facilitate referrals to appropriate resources.
  • Participate in crisis intervention and support the school crisis team.
  • Prepare students for transitions to high school and beyond.
  • Organize programs such as career fairs and attendance celebrations to promote awareness of post-secondary opportunities.
  • Assist students in navigating their academic and community experiences through personalized planning.

Family Engagement:

  • Maintain strong communication with parents and provide regular updates on student progress.
  • Be present at school events to engage with families.
  • Support families in accessing necessary services through appropriate referrals.
  • Provide educational outreach on mental health and substance abuse issues.
  • Be accessible to students, parents, and staff for support.
  • Design and coordinate activities that promote family engagement and education.

Professional Development:

  • Set challenging professional goals annually.
  • Be open to feedback and support from colleagues to foster a collaborative work environment.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development opportunities.
  • Participate in required training as directed by school administration.

Accountability:

  • Conduct annual program audits to evaluate implementation quality.
  • Prepare and submit reports to fulfill program requirements.
  • Utilize data to identify students in need of services.
  • Interpret assessment results to develop individualized academic plans.
  • May oversee counseling interns as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree.
  • Pass a Criminal Background Check.
  • Credential for providing ERMHS services, such as a Pupil Personnel Service (PPS) credential, either completed or in progress.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
  • Familiarity with ACSA Counseling standards.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Proficient in Google Classrooms and other relevant software.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in low-income educational settings.
  • At least two years of school counseling experience or extensive work in urban schools.
  • Experience in charter schools is preferred.
  • Bilingual in Spanish is preferred.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to sit for extended periods and work on a computer.
  • Proficient in motor coordination and finger dexterity for tasks such as typing.
  • Occasional physical effort may be required.
  • Ability to navigate various departments within the organization.
  • Other duties as assigned.
