The mission of Americares Free Clinics is to deliver high-quality healthcare to low-income, uninsured individuals in an environment where every person is treated with dignity and respect. Since its inception in 1994, Americares has expanded access to care for the working poor, establishing the largest free clinic network in the state, with four locations serving approximately 2,000 patients each year. Our clinics in Bridgeport, Danbury, Norwalk, and Stamford serve as vital sources of free medical care for the uninsured in Fairfield County.

About the Role:

The Clinic Nurse will support clinic operations and assist with administrative tasks as required. In the absence of the Clinic Director, the Clinic Nurse will manage the administrative, organizational, and clinical functions. Additionally, the Clinic Nurse will collaborate with the Clinic Director on special projects and other initiatives.

  • Manage inventory of medical supplies and pharmaceuticals
  • Function as a nurse across various clinic sites and triage patient calls effectively
  • Handle patient refills, lab requests, imaging results, and medical record documentation

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Exhibit professionalism and skill in interactions with staff and patients.
  • Contribute as a team member in all aspects of clinic operations.
  • Ensure the clinic operates efficiently in the absence of the Clinic Director, adhering to established protocols and the AFC Policies and Procedures Manual.
  • Demonstrate nursing skills in patient assessment, history taking, triaging, onsite point-of-care testing, administering vaccinations, and providing patient education.
  • Support nursing staff with tests, referrals, charting systems, and procedural decisions.
  • Oversee the function of medical assistants, patient care coordinators, administrative staff, and volunteers in the absence of the Clinic Director.
  • Ensure compliance with AFC policies, particularly regarding Universal Precautions and waste disposal.
  • Be accountable for special assignments as designated by the Clinic Director.
  • Adhere to the AFC policy and procedure manual at all locations.
  • Perform additional duties as requested by Americares.
Key Requirements and Competencies:
  • Connecticut licensed registered nurse with at least one year of experience working with adults with chronic medical conditions.
  • Fluency in English and Spanish is required.
  • Demonstrated clinical skills.
  • Proven ability to work compassionately in a fast-paced medical environment with vulnerable populations.
  • Ability to manage both employed and volunteer staff on daily issues.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with a team, including volunteers.
