Hartford, Connecticut, United States HORST ENGINEERING & MANUFACTURING CO Full time

Job Overview:

The Lead Manufacturing Process Engineer serves as a key authority on the manufacturing techniques for precision machined components. This position entails the formulation of manufacturing strategies and operational documentation derived from the analysis of client technical specifications, standards, and agreements. As a key authority, this role will evaluate the work of peers, offer troubleshooting assistance to production teams, and make critical decisions regarding the interpretation of client and industry specifications and standards. When necessary, this position will innovate advanced manufacturing techniques through the exploration of new machinery, technologies, methodologies, work holding solutions, and cutting-edge tooling.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Analyze and interpret client specifications regarding material characteristics, specialized processes (finishes, coatings, heat treatments, etc.), part identification, geometric tolerances (GD&T), and other essential quality attributes necessary for component production.
  • Develop 3D models, 2D operational documentation, and relevant technical instructions to produce client components in accordance with specifications.
  • Collaborate with various sources of manufacturing and design data (ERP, MRP, CAD, CAM, CNC, etc.) to create a comprehensive and fully approved engineering technical package for the production floor (e.g., Operational Sheets / Traveler).
  • Ensure that manufacturing software (ERP/MRP) accurately reflects CAD data, bill of materials, and method sequences.
  • Conduct peer reviews of colleagues' work for compliance before releasing jobs to production.
  • Follow engineering change management protocols (ECO/ECR/ECN), control, and documentation standards.
  • Provide real-time troubleshooting for manufacturing challenges on the production floor.
  • Assess potential non-conforming components against client specifications to determine whether to process as-is, rework, or scrap.
  • Optimize process costs, including labor, materials, setup, machinery, and inspection.
  • Engage in research through webinars, journals, periodicals, and trade shows, applying insights to the business.
  • Deliver training and peer support as the key authority to facilitate knowledge transfer.
  • Identify process inefficiencies; utilize lean tools and methodologies to enhance processes.
  • Perform miscellaneous duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • An associate degree in manufacturing engineering, industrial engineering, or mechanical engineering is preferred.
    • Certification in Manufacturing Engineering through the Society of Manufacturing Engineers or relevant work experience equivalent to the degree will also be considered.
  • A minimum of 10 years of experience in manufacturing within a machining or contract manufacturing environment.
  • Expertise in interpreting and enforcing aerospace client blueprints/GD&T standards, specialized process specifications, raw material specifications, and relevant industry standards. Previous experience with aerospace clients is preferable.
  • Proficiency in developing process documentation for various manufacturing methods, including multi-axis turning, Swiss screw machining, multi-axis milling, and grinding.
  • Strong understanding of manufacturing with advanced, difficult-to-machine alloys to precision tolerances, and how this knowledge applies to manufacturing methods, work holding, tooling selection, fixturing, and the development of sizes over the progressive operation sequence.
  • Proven ability to create 3D models, 2D process documentation, and supporting technical data, with SolidWorks being preferred.
  • Familiarity with database tools for file management and information technology tools for data collection and analysis, such as ERP, MRP, or PDM systems. Experience with EPCIOR ERP and SolidWorks EPDM is a plus.
