The Senior Manufacturing Engineer serves as a critical authority on manufacturing techniques for precision machined components.
This position is tasked with the formulation of manufacturing procedures and operational documentation derived from customer technical specifications, standards, and agreements.
As a subject matter expert, this role will evaluate the work of peers, offer troubleshooting assistance to production teams, and make informed decisions regarding the interpretation of customer and industry standards.
When necessary, this position will innovate advanced manufacturing techniques through the exploration of new machinery, technologies, methodologies, work holding solutions, and cutting-edge tooling.
Key Responsibilities:
Interpret customer specifications regarding material characteristics, specialized processes (finishes, coatings, heat treatments, etc.), part identification, geometric tolerances (GD&T), and other critical quality attributes necessary for component fabrication.
Collaborate with various sources of manufacturing and design data (ERP, MRP, CAD, CAM, CNC, etc.) to produce a comprehensive and fully approved engineering technical package for the production floor.
Examples include:
Operational Sheets / Traveler documentation.
Ensure that manufacturing software (ERP/MRP) aligns with CAD data, bill of materials, and method sequences.
Conduct peer reviews of colleagues' work for compliance before releasing jobs to production.
Follow engineering change management protocols (ECO/ECR/ECN), control, and documentation standards.
Provide real-time troubleshooting for manufacturing challenges on the production floor.
Assess potential non-conforming components against customer specifications to determine whether to process as-is, rework, or scrap.
Optimize process costs, including labor, materials, setup, machinery, and inspection.Engage in research through webinars, journals, trade shows, and apply learned insights to enhance business practices.
Deliver training and peer support as the subject matter expert to facilitate knowledge transfer.
Identify inefficiencies within processes and employ lean tools and methodologies to drive improvements.
Perform miscellaneous duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
An associate degree in manufacturing engineering, industrial engineering, or mechanical engineering is preferred.
Certification in Manufacturing Engineering through the Society of Manufacturing Engineers or relevant work experience may also be considered.
10+ years of experience in manufacturing within a machining or contract manufacturing setting.
Expertise in interpreting and enforcing aerospace customer blueprints, GD&T standards, special process specifications, raw material specifications, and associated industry standards.
Experience with major OEMs such as Collins Aerospace, Hamilton Sundstrand, Pratt & Whitney, GE, Kaman, Sikorsky, etc., is advantageous.Proficiency in developing process documentation in one or more of the following manufacturing methods: multi-axis turning, Swiss screw machining, turning, multi-axis milling, and/or grinding.
Strong understanding of manufacturing with advanced, difficult-to-machine alloys to precision tolerances, including their implications for manufacturing methods, work holding, tooling selection, fixturing, and size development throughout the operation sequence.Demonstrated capability to create 3D models, 2D process documentation, and supporting technical data, with SolidWorks as a preferred tool.
Familiarity with database tools for file management and IT tools for data collection and analysis, such as ERP, MRP, or PDM systems. Experience with EPCIOR ERP and SolidWorks EPDM is a plus.
