Position Overview:
Under the guidance of the department manager, the Clinical Leader will implement operational strategies and protocols within the Cardiopulmonary Services. This role involves collaboration with management and team members to design, develop, and execute educational initiatives for staff within the department. The Clinical Leader will serve as a vital resource for onboarding and ongoing education of team members.

As a clinical authority, the incumbent is expected to uphold clinical skills and competencies to deliver direct patient care. Additionally, the Clinical Leader will support the review of clinical policies, develop delegation protocols, and ensure readiness for regulatory compliance. Innovative teaching methods will be employed to create a cost-effective and impactful clinical education program for the department.

Leadership Responsibilities:
  • Participate in on-call rotations with other department leaders.
  • Support direct patient care and fulfill additional responsibilities as assigned by management.
  • Assist shift Charge Respiratory Therapists as required.
  • Educate, demonstrate, and reinforce clinical practices among staff.
  • Collaborate with department leadership to coordinate planning and documentation of departmental activities, effectively utilizing available resources.
  • Conduct audits of electronic health records to ensure compliance and accurate charge capture.
  • Provide constructive feedback to management regarding staff competencies.
  • Continuously monitor processes and services for quality, cost-effectiveness, and efficiency, engaging in quality improvement initiatives.
  • Act as a departmental super user and credential trainer.
Equipment Stewardship:
  • Serve as the clinical contact for troubleshooting department equipment and systems.
  • Ensure the availability and functionality of medical equipment and supplies.
  • Develop and maintain a dashboard tracking the status and location of essential departmental equipment, establishing inventory levels.
  • Guide staff on the proper use of equipment and coordinate repairs with Biomedical Engineering as necessary.
  • Address urgent device corrections and equipment recalls promptly to ensure patient and staff safety.
  • Process medical equipment involved in adverse patient interactions according to established policies.
  • Create and maintain instructional materials and equipment labels as needed.
  • Engage with vendors to explore opportunities for enhancing patient care, reducing costs, and improving staff safety and satisfaction.
Education and Professional Development:
  • Recognized as a clinical expert in accordance with the Respiratory Care Practice Act, responsible for coordinating and providing educational resources for staff orientation, in-service training, and competency development.
  • Accountable for assessing, developing, implementing, and evaluating educational programs that uphold clinical practice standards within the Cardiopulmonary Services.
  • Facilitate new staff orientation, precepting, and competency assessments, providing individualized instruction in various settings.
  • Utilize available resources to support the professional growth and competence of staff therapists.
  • Evaluate educational initiatives and adjust programs as necessary.
  • Employ adult learning principles and curriculum development skills to ensure ample opportunities for staff to complete required and elective educational offerings.
  • Advocate for the advancement of evidence-based clinical practices, contribute to policy development, and participate in performance improvement efforts.
