Fire Safety Engineering Specialist

Los Alamos National Security, LLC is seeking a Fire Protection Engineering Technologist to utilize engineering methodologies, concepts, and a comprehensive understanding of fire safety systems to address facility and operational challenges.
This role is part of the Engineering Services Division Office (ES-DO), which develops, maintains, and implements a wide array of engineering capabilities to deliver innovative solutions that support the organization's scientific and national security objectives.
ES-DO is tasked with executing the Conduct of Engineering (COE) program at the organization, focusing on modifications and new installations of systems, structures, and components. In this capacity, you will be responsible for designing enhancements to existing fire protection systems and creating entirely new systems while collaborating with multiple design teams to maintain and upgrade existing facilities and infrastructure.
Compensation
This position will be filled at either the Engineering Technologist 2 or Engineering Technologist 3 level, with a salary range depending on the skills and experience of the selected candidate.
Key Responsibilities
Essential Knowledge:
- Proficiency in computer-aided drafting techniques, CAD modeling, and design
- Understanding of mathematical formulas, computations, and data collection methods
- Familiarity with engineering work planning and control methods, principles, and basic technical responsibilities, including design and systems technology within the designated discipline.
- Knowledge of industry, regulatory, or DOE/NNSA Complex codes, standards, and criteria relevant to the engineering discipline.
Required Experience:
- Design experience in fire protection systems for commercial and/or industrial environments
- Application of building codes and standards to facility designs
- Capability to apply engineering judgment to facility and operations-based engineering challenges
- Advanced experience working with Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) requirements
- Preparation of calculations, application of engineering methods, and use of technology-aided engineering tools to address facility and operations-based engineering challenges
- Comprehensive knowledge of industry, regulatory, or Department of Energy/National Nuclear Security Administration (DOE/NNSA) complex codes, standards, and criteria pertinent to the engineering discipline
- Mentoring and coaching junior personnel
- Effective communication skills, both written and verbal
Educational Requirements:
- Engineering Technologist 2: A Bachelor's Degree in Engineering Technology, Science, Math, or a related field and 5 years of directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Engineering Technologist 3: A Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Science, Math, or a related field from an accredited institution and 8 years of directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Current advanced-level NICET certification(s) in one or more fire protection disciplines
- Familiarity with DOE and LANL Engineering Standards and Conduct of Engineering principles and procedures
- NFPA CFPS Certification
- Proven experience leading design efforts
Work Environment:
The position is onsite and located in a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in strategic science for national security.
