Job Summary

The National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) is seeking a highly skilled VLBA Specialist I-II to join our team. As a key member of our technical staff, you will be responsible for the installation, repair, and maintenance of complex radio astronomy equipment, including the 25-meter antenna and support infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform routine maintenance, inspection, testing, troubleshooting, repair, and data delivery on the Very Long Baseline Array Station.
  • Use standard electronic test equipment, recording effects on unit performance, inspection, and adjustment and/or replacement of defective system components.
  • Monitor and maintain all systems for proper operation, including emergency power generating equipment, fire alarms, and HVAC systems.
  • Consult with other VLBA Specialists and NRAO technicians and engineers to formulate and plan corrective actions.
  • Perform other preventive and corrective maintenance on hardware, test equipment, and peripheral equipment, including inspection against specifications or for quality.
  • Use electronics test equipment such as digital multimeters, spectrum analyzers, oscilloscopes, signal generators, and power supplies.
  • Use hand tools for mechanical work or repair.
  • Upkeep of the site and facilities.
Requirements
  • Associate of Science degree or equivalent in Electronics.
  • Two years of experience in the Electronics or Electrical fields.
  • Qualified candidates with 5 or more years of experience may be considered for the Specialist II classification.
  • Clearance requirement: Must be able to pass a security background check to work on the Los Alamos National Laboratory grounds.
Competencies
  • Ability to work independently and reliably with minimal direct supervision.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to operate a personal computer and common software.
  • Problem-solving skills and ability to deal with a variety of situations where only limited documentation and standardization may exist.
  • Current Driver's License and ability to drive Observatory vehicles.
