Position Overview:

This role is available at either the Nuclear Safety Specialist 3 or 4 level, contingent upon the qualifications of the chosen candidate.

Key Responsibilities:
As a Nuclear Criticality Safety (NCS) Specialist within the LANL NCS Program, you will offer expert guidance to ensure that operations involving fissionable materials remain subcritical under both standard and potential abnormal circumstances.


Nuclear Safety Specialist 3:
($122,300)

Responsibilities include:
  • Providing expert guidance to operational teams.
  • Collaborating with personnel from operating organizations on NCS assessments as the lead NCS Specialist.
  • Conducting independent evaluations of NCS assessments.
  • Performing routine assessments of fissionable material operations.
  • Leading and/or participating in NCS responses to programmatic challenges and criticality process deviations.
  • Engaging in NCS emergency response preparation, including the development of emergency procedures, plans, exercises, and drills.
  • Independently preparing, reviewing, and/or presenting technical reports to both internal and external stakeholders in the criticality safety community.
  • Delivering NCS training for all levels of personnel involved in fissionable material operations.
  • Assisting in the formulation and/or review of new or proposed modifications to existing NCS programmatic policies and documentation.
  • Leading and/or participating in assessments and audits of the NCS Program.
  • Mentoring less experienced Nuclear Criticality Safety Specialists and Analysts in training on all aspects of criticality safety.

Nuclear Safety Specialist 4:
($146,800 - $254,700)

In addition to the responsibilities listed above, the Nuclear Safety Specialist 4 will:
  • Independently develop and/or review new or proposed changes to existing NCS programmatic policies and documentation.
  • Advise NCS Management on criticality safety topics, including the implications of changes to national consensus standards.
  • Independently lead teams of less experienced NCS Specialists on projects or assignments.
  • Interface with relevant governmental departments for criticality safety matters.
  • Contribute to the creation of technical proposals and project cost/schedule documentation.
  • Provide technical leadership to address emergent issues impacting the NCS Division.

Qualifications:
Minimum Requirements:
  • Prior experience in criticality safety or a related field (typically 7-8 years).
  • Advanced knowledge in NCS, including evaluations, program implementation, computational tools, standards, and regulatory guidelines.
  • Expertise in the ANSI/ANS 8 Series National Standards and applicable DOE Orders, Standards, and Guides.
  • Proficiency in using common NCS computer codes and cross sections for modeling and analysis.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct NCS evaluations with all forms of fissile/fissionable materials.
  • Experience in conducting research, exploring alternative solutions, and recommending resolutions for NCS-related challenges.
  • Ability to effectively communicate major NCS concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Proven experience as a mentor/coach for less experienced personnel.

Additional Requirements for Nuclear Safety Specialist 4:
  • Minimum of 10 years of relevant experience.
  • Expert-level knowledge in NCS, including evaluations, program implementation, computational tools, standards, and regulatory guidelines.
  • Significant experience in independently reviewing criticality safety evaluations and supporting calculations in accordance with DOE standards.

Education:

A Bachelor's degree in Nuclear Engineering, Nuclear Physics, or a related field from an accredited institution is required, along with relevant experience.


Work Environment:

This position is based onsite and involves collaboration with a multidisciplinary team at a leading research institution focused on national security.
