MALT is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation of agricultural land in Marin County. Established in 1980, MALT works at the intersection of agriculture and conservation, ensuring that the region's farmland remains productive and sustainable. Our mission is to protect Marin County's agricultural land for continued agricultural use, promoting healthy communities and environmental stewardship.

Role Summary

The Accounting and Grants Associate will report directly to the Director of Finance. This full-time position (with an option for part-time) is essential for supporting various accounting functions and assisting with the management of MALT's grant programs. The ideal candidate will possess strong teamwork skills while also being capable of independent work.

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree in a relevant field, or a minimum of three years of experience in an accounting role (preferably in a nonprofit setting).
  • Familiarity with accounting principles (GAAP).
  • Experience in grant management or grant writing is advantageous.
  • Understanding of accounting workflows and procedures.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, along with excellent organizational abilities.
  • Proficiency in accounting software, Google Workspace, and Microsoft Office Suite (experience with Excel V-Lookups and Pivot Tables; knowledge of MIP fund accounting software is a plus).
  • Exhibit integrity, reliability, professionalism, and confidentiality in all tasks.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage cash disbursement transactions and vendor communications, including:
    • Processing accounts payable.
    • Handling business credit card transactions and reimbursements.
    • Managing employee expense reimbursements.
  • Ensure compliance with organizational policies and proper documentation for all expenditures.
  • Assist with month-end and year-end closing processes, including:
    • Preparing journal entries and bank reconciliations.
    • Classifying expenses according to GAAP and organizational budgets.
    • Supporting audit and tax filing preparations.
    • Maintaining vendor tax information and preparing annual reporting.
  • Maintain electronic file management for the finance team in line with established policies.
  • Assist in preparing monthly financial reports and annual budgets.
  • Support grants administration by facilitating communication between program staff and financial systems for grants.
  • Perform grant-related functions, including budget analysis, reimbursement requests, and financial reporting.
  • Collaborate with program staff to ensure the completion of deliverables and reports.

Compensation and Benefits

This position offers a flexible schedule, accommodating both in-office and remote work. The hourly rate is $39.00.
