POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University is in search of a dedicated Engineering Support Specialist to contribute to various initiatives within the Metals, Ceramics, and Coatings Processing Department. This role focuses on materials synthesis and analysis across a spectrum of ceramic, metallic, and semiconductor materials. You will engage in projects aimed at enhancing materials design and performance, employing advanced techniques such as field-assisted sintering technology (FAST), metallography, and analytical characterization of diverse material compositions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support material synthesis, processing, and characterization, including device fabrication and simulation for advanced coatings and material systems across various programs.
  • Assist in the design and monitoring of experiments, compiling and analyzing data for materials and coatings, enhancing properties for applications in aerospace, defense, biomedical, and other industries.
  • Help troubleshoot complex equipment issues and oversee minor repairs, collaborating with technical personnel as necessary.
  • Work collaboratively with research teams, providing assistance and sharing knowledge on laboratory equipment operation.
  • Contribute to the development and refinement of standard operating procedures.

Qualifications:

A minimum of an Associate's Degree or equivalent experience is required, preferably in Materials Science and Engineering, Ceramic Science, or a related discipline.

Essential Skills:

  • Familiarity with various coating deposition methods.
  • Experience with materials characterization techniques, including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), optical microscopy (OM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS).
  • Proficiency in sample and failure analysis.

Preferred Experience:

Prior internship experience in process development, experimental design, or materials analysis is advantageous.
