POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University is in search of a dedicated Engineering Support Specialist to contribute to various initiatives within the Metals, Ceramics, and Coatings Processing Department. This role focuses on the synthesis and evaluation of materials, including ceramics, metals, semiconductors, and hybrid compositions. The selected candidate will engage in projects related to materials design, enhancement, field-assisted sintering technology (FAST), metallography, and analytical characterization of materials such as powders and polycrystalline/single-crystal bulk materials.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support material synthesis, processing, characterization, and device fabrication for advanced coatings and material systems across diverse programs utilizing technologies such as FAST, cold spray, electron beam physical vapor deposition, sputtering, chemical vapor deposition, and microelectronics fabrication.
  • Assist in the design and monitoring of experiments, compiling and analyzing data for a variety of materials and coatings, including nanocomposite and functionally graded systems aimed at enhancing properties for applications in aerospace, defense, biomedical, and optical sectors.
  • Help troubleshoot complex equipment issues and facilitate minor repairs, coordinating with electronics technicians or electrical engineers as necessary. Utilize basic electronic testing instruments.
  • Collaborate with research personnel and students to ensure proper operation of laboratory equipment and contribute to the development of standard operating procedures.

Qualifications:

A minimum of an Associate's Degree or equivalent experience is required, preferably in Materials Science and Engineering, Ceramic Science and Engineering, or related fields.

Essential Skills:

  • Proficient understanding of various coating deposition techniques.
  • Experience with materials characterization methods, including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), optical microscopy (OM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS).
  • Familiarity with optical profilometry and sample analysis.

Preferred Experience:

Prior internship experience in process development, experimental design, or materials analysis is advantageous.
