POSITION OVERVIEW AND REQUIRED SKILLS:

The Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University is seeking a committed professional to fill the role of Engineering Support Specialist within the Electronic Materials and Devices Department (EMDD). This position is essential in facilitating research and innovation in electronic materials processing, semiconductor device manufacturing, and materials development.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Executing sample preparation activities such as machining, cutting, and grinding
  • Carrying out processes like Chemi-mechanical polishing (CMP) and the application of metal electrodes through screen printing
  • Collecting and analyzing data utilizing techniques such as EDS, XRD, AFM, and white light interferometry
  • Assisting in the setup and operation of furnaces/reactors, alongside device fabrication and evaluation

This role is available at either Level 2 or Level 3, contingent upon the qualifications of the applicant. A minimum of an Associate's Degree in an engineering or technical discipline, coupled with relevant experience, is required.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate:

  • Expertise in sample preparation and materials characterization
  • Familiarity with laboratory safety standards and practices
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office tools and strong communication abilities
  • Ability to collaborate effectively within a dynamic team setting

Preferred qualifications include practical experience in various materials characterization methods, device processing techniques, and a foundational understanding of semiconductor devices and additive manufacturing.

The work environment for this position will be at the EMDD Laboratory and the Millennium Science Complex (MSC) on the University Park campus.
