POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University is on the lookout for a dedicated Engineering Support Specialist. This role is pivotal in assisting various initiatives within the Metals, Ceramics, and Coatings Processing Department, focusing on the synthesis and evaluation of materials including ceramics, metals, semiconductors, and composite materials. Your contributions will be essential in projects related to materials design, enhancement, and advanced characterization techniques.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support material synthesis, processing, and characterization, as well as device fabrication and simulation processes for advanced coatings and material systems.
  • Engage in experimental design setup and monitoring, compiling and analyzing data for diverse materials and coatings, enhancing properties for applications across aerospace, defense, biomedical, and other industries.
  • Assist in diagnosing and resolving complex equipment issues, overseeing minor repairs and maintenance, and collaborating with technical staff as necessary.
  • Collaborate with research personnel and students to ensure effective operation of laboratory equipment.
  • Contribute to the development and refinement of standard operating procedures to enhance laboratory efficiency.

Qualifications:

A minimum of an Associate's Degree or equivalent experience is typically required, with a preference for degrees in Materials Science and Engineering, Ceramic Science and Engineering, or related fields.

Essential Skills:

  • Proficient understanding of various coating deposition techniques.
  • Experience with materials characterization methods such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM), optical microscopy (OM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS).
  • Familiarity with optical profilometry and conducting sample and failure analyses.

Preferred Experience:

Prior internship experience in process development, experimental design, materials processing, or analysis is advantageous.
