Mechanical Engineering Support Specialists at The Applied Research Laboratory

The Mechanical Fabrication and Assembly Department within the Undersea Systems Office (USO) at The Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) is in search of Mechanical Engineering Support Specialists to engage in diverse projects and perform a variety of tasks. The Department is dedicated to excelling in the research, development, assembly, integration, and delivery of specialized electro-mechanical systems tailored for undersea applications.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Execute assembly operations and fabrication of facility and testing equipment.
  • Contribute to and carry out design and layout of standard facility and testing equipment as instructed.
  • Conduct inspections, tests, and calibrations of parts and equipment as directed.
  • Evaluate material and component selections based on operational and performance criteria.
  • Identify and assess system faults, making adjustments and repairs as needed.
  • Assist senior technical and engineering personnel in collecting, compiling, and archiving test data.
  • Collaborate as part of a test project support team, including taking on selected leadership roles.
  • Develop and supply documentation for task procedures and processes.

This position offers opportunities at various levels based on your education and experience, with a minimum requirement of an Associate's degree. Essential skills include proficiency in electro-mechanical assembly, operation of machine shop tools, interpretation of engineering drawings, and familiarity with pneumatics, electrical systems, and hydraulics. Attention to detail, strong writing abilities, proficiency in Microsoft Office, and the capability to obtain a Secret level DOD security clearance are also required.

The Applied Research Laboratory at Penn State is a prominent entity in defense science, systems, and technologies, with a focus on naval missions and related domains. Important Requirements:

  • Expertise in complex electro-mechanical assembly, testing, and troubleshooting.
  • Proficient operation of machine shop tools and precision measuring instruments.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings and mechanical assembly procedures.

  • Strong attention to detail and proficient writing skills.
  • Capability to obtain and maintain a Secret level DOD security clearance.

Salary Range:

$56,000 - $89,600.00
