PROPULSION SYSTEMS ENGINEER (STARSHIP)

We offer dynamic, fast-paced, and results-oriented engineering roles for those with ambition. Our team is responsible for the design, construction, activation, modification, enhancement, and maintenance of the fluid systems that power the world's most formidable rocket. Expect to engage in daily problem-solving, where your skills will be tested, and hardware you conceptualized, fabricated, and installed may be utilized within the same day in a development-centric atmosphere. From managing cryogenic fluids at thousands of gallons per minute to handling high-pressure gases, we devise innovative solutions to support the rigorous demands of our launch and testing programs, both now and in the future.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Evaluate, design, and construct systems that are essential for successful rocket launches and testing.
  • Oversee projects from inception to completion, including design reviews, project justification, equipment sourcing, and coordinating the implementation of your concepts.
  • Create modular components designed for mass production at future launch facilities worldwide.
  • Utilize interdisciplinary engineering expertise in system-level process design, detailed thermal and fluid analysis, structural engineering, materials selection, and optimization of cost and schedule.
  • Collaborate closely with technicians and support teams to bring your designs to life and resolve real-time challenges.
  • Maintain continuous communication with the launch operations team to swiftly adjust plans as needed to meet stringent deadlines.
  • Activate and troubleshoot equipment to fulfill design goals and refine maintenance strategies to minimize future downtimes.
  • Independently assess complex challenges and develop practical solutions that align with program objectives.
  • Engage in hands-on field projects essential for sustaining the company's rocket launch operations.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in physics, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, aerospace engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
  • Minimum of 1 year of practical experience in design or construction (internships, clubs, and competition team experiences are acceptable).

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Ability to work autonomously as well as collaboratively, demonstrating initiative and effective communication.
  • Capability to adapt quickly to changing roles and responsibilities while maintaining a sense of urgency in a high-pressure environment.
  • Willingness to undertake additional tasks to ensure a productive work atmosphere.
  • Experience in rapid problem-solving under stress.
  • Proficiency in addressing challenges with tight deadlines.
  • Strong foundational understanding of fluid and/or structural/mechanical systems.
  • Creativity in designing for reliability, efficiency, and maintainability from the ground up.
  • General hands-on experience with machining, welding, and fabrication techniques is advantageous.
  • Experience with instrumentation, testing, data analysis, and verification against models.
  • 3+ years of experience in mechanical, fluid, or thermal design within an industrial context or equivalent.
  • Familiarity with high-pressure and cryogenic fluid systems and components.
  • Experience in producing technical drawings for fabrication processes.
  • Collaborative mindset, eager to identify optimal solutions while balancing cost and timelines.
  • Meticulous attention to detail, with the ability to recognize interactions with other systems to prevent issues.
  • Intermediate proficiency in CAD software (NX is a plus).
  • Ability to validate designs through simplified calculations; experience in finite element analysis (FEA) or computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is a plus.
  • Experience with ASME piping and pressure vessel design.
  • A creative and enthusiastic approach to tackling challenges, coupled with a self-motivated, positive attitude.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to respond to emergencies to support priority projects and missions.
  • Willingness to work extended hours and weekends as necessary; flexibility is essential.
  • Capability to work in extreme outdoor conditions when required - heat, cold, wind, rain, etc.
  • Ability to work in environments with exposure to fumes, odors, and noise.
  • Working conditions may involve confined spaces, requiring physical dexterity.
  • Ability to perform tasks that involve standing, kneeling, crouching, twisting, and climbing.
