Brownsville, Texas, United States SpaceX Full time

At SpaceX, we believe in a future where humanity explores the cosmos, and we are actively working to turn that vision into reality. Our mission is to develop groundbreaking technologies that will enable human life on Mars and beyond.

MECHANICAL ENGINEER, LAUNCH PAD (STARSHIP)

As a mechanical engineer, you will play a crucial role in the development of the Starship Tower and Launch Mount, integral components of a fully reusable transportation system designed for missions to Earth orbit, the Moon, Mars, and beyond.

Your responsibilities will encompass hardware development from the initial system architecture through to design, analysis, activation, and operational phases. In this role, you will design welded structures, large-scale mechanisms, electromechanical actuation systems, and fluid systems, including hydraulic and cryogenic systems. These systems are essential for stacking the two stages of Starship, ensuring stability in high winds, loading propellant prior to launch, and recovering vehicles post-mission. The Starship program emphasizes rapid iteration and enhancement, allowing engineers to continuously innovate and advance technology throughout the program's lifecycle.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead hardware development for systems within the Starship tower and launch mount, overseeing all phases from basic architecture to operational execution.
  • Manage the design and manufacturing processes for mechanisms, actuation systems, fluid systems, and large structures.
  • Collaborate closely with analysts to establish loading requirements and with manufacturing engineers to refine designs for efficient production.
  • Work alongside engineers responsible for the Starship and Super Heavy vehicles to optimize the integration of the tower, launch mount, and vehicle systems.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline.
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience with CAD and FEA software packages.
  • At least 1 year of experience in mechanical or fluid systems design, analysis, and hands-on assembly (internship or project experience is acceptable).

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master's degree in engineering or a related technical field.
  • 3+ years of professional experience in mechanical design and analysis.
  • 2+ years of hands-on project experience with complex mechanical systems, preferably in a leadership role.
  • Strong understanding and application of GD&T principles.
  • Proven knowledge of structural analysis and failure modes of complex mechanical systems and weldments.
  • Self-motivated with excellent organizational, written, and verbal communication skills.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Work on tower hardware typically occurs in confined spaces at elevated heights, requiring physical dexterity.
  • Ability to pass a background check as required for specific operational roles.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

Pay range:
Mechanical Engineer/Level I: $95,000.00 - $115,000.00 per year
Mechanical Engineer/Level II: $110,000.00 - $130,000.00 per year

Your actual level and base salary will be determined on a case-by-case basis and may vary based on job-related knowledge, skills, education, and experience.

Base salary is just one component of your total rewards package at SpaceX. You may also be eligible for long-term incentives, including company stock options, discretionary bonuses, and the opportunity to purchase additional stock at a discount through an Employee Stock Purchase Plan. Comprehensive medical, vision, and dental coverage, access to a 401(k) retirement plan, short & long-term disability insurance, life insurance, paid parental leave, and various other discounts and perks are also part of the benefits package. Additionally, you will accrue 3 weeks of paid vacation and be eligible for 10 or more paid holidays annually.

ITAR REQUIREMENTS:

  • To comply with U.S. Government export regulations, applicants must be U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents, refugees, or asylees, or be eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
