Position Overview

The Water System Operations Specialist is responsible for the construction, upkeep, and management of the municipal water infrastructure. This role emphasizes adherence to safety protocols, including work zone safety, confined space entry, and excavation safety, while ensuring the use of personal protective equipment. The operator will handle heavy machinery with professionalism and care, prioritizing safety and efficiency in all tasks.

Key Responsibilities:

The incumbent will engage in skilled activities related to the installation, maintenance, and repair of water system components, including pipes, hydrants, valves, and mains. Additional responsibilities include:

  • Operating various machinery such as front-end loaders, backhoes, and compactors.
  • Responding to emergency situations and assisting in crisis management related to water system failures.
  • Conducting excavation tasks, including digging, bracing, backfilling, and tamping.
  • Installing and repairing asphalt and concrete surfaces.
  • Identifying and addressing issues during water service interruptions, including locating problems and managing service shut-offs.
  • Performing installations and repairs on water mains and related infrastructure using appropriate methods and tools.
  • Interpreting engineering blueprints and diagrams related to the water and sewer systems.
  • Maintaining and repairing underground utilities associated with the water infrastructure.
  • Conducting routine maintenance on equipment, including checking fluid levels and performing vehicle inspections.
  • Leading customer interactions and resolving issues related to the water system.
  • Assisting in cross-departmental emergency responses as necessary.
  • Collecting and transporting water samples in compliance with environmental regulations.
  • Reporting emergencies to supervisory personnel.
  • Fostering effective working relationships with colleagues and the public.
  • Utilizing electronic work order systems for task management.
  • Providing training to new personnel as required.
Qualifications:

Applicants should possess a solid understanding of:

  • Safe and proficient operation of heavy machinery and vehicles.
  • Municipal regulations regarding equipment operation.
  • Safety laws and regulations pertinent to the role.
  • Principles of drinking water system maintenance.

Demonstrated capabilities include:

  • Identifying maintenance and repair needs.
  • Exercising sound judgment in technical matters.
  • Operating machinery with skill and efficiency.
  • Reading and interpreting engineering specifications.
  • Working independently and managing tasks without direct supervision.
  • Complying with all relevant policies and regulations.
  • Physically handling weights up to 100 lbs as needed.
  • Adapting to various weather conditions.
  • Being available for both scheduled and unscheduled overtime.
Requirements:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • At least one year of experience in public water supply operations or related construction work.
  • Valid Class B driver's license with air-brake endorsement.
  • Massachusetts Hoisting License with 2B restriction within 120 days of hire.
  • D1 Water Distribution license within 6 months of hire.
  • Responsible driving record.
Work Environment:

This position requires physical agility and strength, with exposure to outdoor conditions, including varying weather. The role involves noise, vibrations, and potential hazards associated with construction sites.

Physical and Mental Demands:

Employees must meet the physical requirements necessary to perform essential job functions, including standing, walking, lifting, and operating tools. Visual acuity and acute hearing are essential for safe operation of vehicles and equipment.
