Heavy Equipment Operator for Water Services

The Heavy Equipment Operator for Water Services is tasked with the construction, upkeep, and management of the municipal water infrastructure. This role emphasizes adherence to safety protocols, including work zone safety, confined space entry, and excavation safety, while ensuring the use of personal protective equipment. The operator will skillfully manage motorized equipment, prioritizing safety and efficiency in all operations.
Key Responsibilities:The incumbent will perform a variety of skilled tasks related to the installation, maintenance, and repair of water system components, including pipes, hydrants, valves, and mains. Additional responsibilities include:
- Operating machinery such as front-end loaders, backhoes, and compactors.
- Responding to emergency situations and assisting in crisis management related to water system failures.
- Conducting excavation work, including digging, backfilling, and tamping.
- Installing and repairing asphalt and concrete surfaces.
- Identifying the cause of water service disruptions, isolating the affected area, and executing repairs using appropriate methods and tools.
- Performing installations and repairs on water mains and associated appurtenances.
- Interpreting engineering blueprints and diagrams relevant to the water and sewer systems.
- Locating and maintaining underground utilities related to the water infrastructure.
- Conducting routine maintenance on equipment, including inspections and fluid level checks.
- Maintaining effective communication with customers regarding water system issues.
- Collecting and transporting water samples in compliance with environmental regulations.
- Reporting emergencies to supervisory personnel.
- Collaborating with other departments during water and sewer emergencies.
- Utilizing electronic work order systems for task management.
- Providing training to junior personnel as needed.
