Position Overview

Under general supervision, the role involves executing complex financial, statistical, and accounting recordkeeping tasks. Responsibilities include the preparation and assistance in the formulation of financial statements, documents, analyses, and reports. The incumbent will maintain accounting records, reports, and systems, or computer-based accounting systems, while performing related duties as necessary.

The Accounting Technician classification is distinct from the Account Clerk III due to its requirement for a high degree of independent judgment and interpretive skills. Individuals in this role are responsible for managing a variety of intricate departmental fiscal records and broad accounting functions, often taking on a leadership role.

Key Responsibilities

General County Department Duties:
  • Compile and interpret data for budget preparation in a large department.
  • Supervise and engage in maintaining records in accounting systems for fund appropriations and expenditures, accounts payable, and accounts receivable.
  • Assist in developing financial record-keeping forms and accounting systems.
  • Initiate fund transfers and interdepartmental billing adjustments.
  • Prepare complex statistical and accounting reports from various sources.
  • Review employee time cards and track vacation and time off.
Auditor/Controller Department Duties:
  • Assist in reviewing and auditing computer-based accounting documentation for accuracy.
  • Balance accounts and investigate discrepancies by checking previous entries and supporting documents.
  • Notify departments of errors and necessary corrections.
  • Review account balances before releasing payments.
  • Maintain general ledger and appropriations ledgers, encumbering funds by department.
  • Post expenditures and appropriations charges, assisting in verifying data entry accuracy.
Essential Skills and Abilities
  • Prepare clear and accurate financial statements and reports.
  • Perform a variety of complex accounting clerical tasks with minimal supervision.
  • Conduct various arithmetic calculations swiftly and accurately.
  • Interpret and apply laws, regulations, and policies effectively.
  • Maintain detailed records and analyze data proficiently.
  • Coordinate and direct the work of others.
  • Establish effective working relationships with colleagues.
Minimum Qualifications

Three (3) years of relevant technical experience in financial, accounting, or statistical recordkeeping activities. Formal education in basic accounting or bookkeeping may substitute for experience on a year-for-year basis.
