Position Overview

Under general supervision, the role involves executing complex financial, statistical, and accounting recordkeeping tasks. Responsibilities include preparing and assisting in the formulation of financial statements, documents, analyses, and reports, as well as maintaining accounting records and systems. The position demands a high degree of independent judgment and interpretive skills, distinguishing it from lower-level accounting roles.

Key Responsibilities

The incumbent may be tasked with the following duties:
  • Compiling and interpreting data for budget preparation in a large department.
  • Supervising and participating in the maintenance of records within accounting systems for fund appropriations and expenditures.
  • Assisting in the development of financial record-keeping forms and accounting systems.
  • Initiating fund transfers and interdepartmental billing adjustments.
  • Preparing complex statistical and accounting reports from diverse sources.
  • Reviewing employee time cards and tracking leave balances.
In the Auditor/Controller Department, responsibilities may include:
  • Assisting in the review and audit of computer-based accounting documentation for accuracy.
  • Balancing accounts and investigating discrepancies.
  • Notifying departments of errors and necessary corrections.
  • Maintaining general ledger and appropriations ledgers.
  • Interpreting and applying detailed instructions in specialized areas.
Essential Skills and Knowledge

The ideal candidate should possess knowledge of:
  • Basic budget preparation procedures.
  • Methods and practices for maintaining fiscal and accounting records.
  • Governmental accounting principles.
  • Data processing procedures integrated with accounting systems.
Minimum Qualifications

Experience: A minimum of three (3) years of responsible technical experience in financial, accounting, or statistical recordkeeping activities is required. Formal education in basic accounting or bookkeeping may substitute for experience on a year-for-year basis.
