Position Overview

Lead Philanthropic Efforts at the Straz Center for the Performing Arts

The Chief of Major and Planned Contributions spearheads the fundraising initiatives at the Straz Center by formulating and executing a comprehensive strategy aimed at achieving established financial objectives. This role involves identifying, nurturing, and soliciting potential and existing donors to negotiate and finalize various planned giving arrangements and significant outright donations to support the Center's long-term programs, endowment, and capital projects.

This position collaborates closely with the Chief Development Officer and senior volunteers to establish policies related to major gifts and planned giving. It entails evaluating the implications of proposed gift arrangements and decisions on the organization while integrating these efforts with the overall fundraising strategy. Success in this role is gauged by the effectiveness in securing commitments, with a focus on donor engagement, cultivation, and stewardship. Annually, the Chief reviews the strategic plan to set goals, action items, and budget expectations for the upcoming year.

Key Responsibilities:

Information Dissemination on Major and Planned Contributions

  • Design and implement a comprehensive marketing strategy to promote endowment and planned giving opportunities to all stakeholders.
  • Oversee the development of related promotional materials and content for the Straz Center's website.
  • Initiate targeted informational outreach to potential donors and respond to inquiries promptly.
  • Prepare timely reports following donor interactions.
  • Provide regular updates to leadership and the foundation board regarding progress.

Prospective Donor Identification

  • Collaborate with leadership to define funding priorities for the endowment and major gifts.
  • Develop and implement strategies to identify, cultivate, and solicit prospects for major and planned contributions.
  • Utilize a moves management system to ensure prospects are effectively managed through the engagement process.
  • Create tailored engagement plans for each individual in the donor portfolio.
  • Work alongside other development officers to coordinate endowment and planned giving strategies.
  • Enhance connections with the professional planned giving community and keep them informed about the Center's initiatives.
  • Maintain an organized record-keeping system to ensure all contacts receive appropriate follow-up.

Donor Cultivation

  • Engage with prospects and current donors through personalized correspondence and intentional meetings to foster interest in the Center's programs.
  • Address inquiries and keep prospects informed about the Center's activities.
  • Strengthen relationships by managing an active portfolio of prospects.

Contribution Options Determination

  • Utilize gift agreements and letters of intent to assist donors in planning the use of their contributions.

Proposal Writing and Presentation Preparation

  • Document plans for major or planned gifts in a clear and persuasive manner for prospective donors.
  • Consult with experts as necessary to outline details effectively.

Donor Commitment Maintenance

  • Ensure donors remain confident and enthusiastic about their contributions.
  • Establish a comprehensive stewardship plan that includes timely acknowledgments, annual updates on the impact of their gifts, and recognition based on contribution levels.
  • Implement a recognition program for all major and planned gifts and initiate donor appreciation events.

Ongoing Donor Relationship Management

  • Maintain regular communication with donors to foster ongoing relationships.
  • Stay alert to opportunities for additional gift planning with donors.
  • Seek larger contributions to support the Center's ongoing initiatives.
  • Develop and update policies related to endowment and planned gifts.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Stay informed about the latest trends and legal developments in planned giving.
  • Remain knowledgeable about the performing arts sector and the Center's mission and vision.
  • Contribute to team efforts in planning and development, participating in decision-making processes.
  • Assist with departmental functions and special events as needed to ensure smooth operations.

Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of planned giving instruments is preferred.
  • Demonstrated integrity, confidentiality, and the ability to build positive relationships with stakeholders.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
  • High energy, initiative, and follow-through capabilities.
  • Team-oriented and responsive in a fast-paced environment.
  • Commitment to the mission and goals of the Straz Center.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree required.
  • A minimum of seven years of fundraising or related experience with a proven track record in securing major and/or planned gifts.
  • Advanced knowledge of major gift solicitation and capital campaign fundraising is a plus.
