Position Overview

Lead Philanthropic Initiatives at the Straz Center for the Performing Arts

The Chief of Major and Planned Philanthropy is responsible for spearheading the Straz Center's fundraising initiatives focused on significant and planned contributions. This role involves the formulation and execution of a comprehensive fundraising strategy aimed at meeting defined objectives. The Chief will identify, nurture, and engage potential and existing donors to negotiate and finalize various planned giving arrangements and substantial outright donations that support the long-term objectives of the Straz Center, including its endowment and capital projects.

This position collaborates closely with the Chief Development Officer and senior volunteers to establish policies regarding major gifts and planned giving. It requires careful consideration and analysis of the implications of proposed gift arrangements and decisions on the organization, ensuring alignment with the overall fundraising strategy. Success in this role is evaluated based on the effectiveness in securing commitments, with a focus on outreach, cultivation, and donor stewardship. Annually, the Chief will assess the strategic plan to set goals for endowment and planned giving, along with actionable steps and budgetary expectations for the upcoming year.

Key Responsibilities:

Provide Insight on Major and Planned Contributions

  • Design and implement a thorough marketing strategy to promote endowment and planned giving opportunities to all stakeholders.
  • Oversee the development of related promotional materials and online content regarding planned giving.
  • Initiate targeted informational outreach to prospective donors and respond to inquiries promptly.
  • Document interactions with donors through timely call reports.
  • Deliver regular updates to leadership and the foundation board regarding progress.

Identify Potential Donors

  • Collaborate with leadership to define priority funding needs for the endowment and major annual contributions.
  • Develop and execute strategies to identify, cultivate, and solicit potential donors for major and planned gifts.
  • Utilize a moves management system to ensure prospects are effectively managed through the engagement process.
  • Create tailored engagement plans for each individual in the donor portfolio.
  • Work alongside other development officers to coordinate endowment and planned giving strategies.
  • Enhance connections with the professional planned giving community and maintain an informed network regarding Straz Center initiatives.
  • Maintain a comprehensive record-keeping system and follow-up procedures to ensure timely engagement with all contacts.

Cultivate Relationships with Donors

  • Engage with prospects and current donors through personalized communication and organized meetings to foster interest in Straz Center programs.
  • Address inquiries and keep potential donors informed about the Center's initiatives.
  • Build and strengthen relationships by managing an active portfolio of prospects.

Outline Contribution Options

  • Utilize agreements and letters of intent to assist donors in formulating plans for their contributions.

Draft Proposals and Presentations

  • Document plans for major or planned gifts in a clear and persuasive manner for prospective donors and their representatives.
  • Consult with experts as necessary to outline detailed proposals.

Ensure Donor Commitment

  • Maintain donor confidence and enthusiasm regarding their contributions.
  • Implement a comprehensive stewardship plan that includes timely acknowledgments, annual updates on the impact of their gifts, and recognition based on contribution levels.
  • Manage a recognition program for all major and planned gifts, initiating appreciation efforts and events.

Maintain Donor Relationships

  • Engage with donors regularly to sustain ongoing relationships.
  • Remain alert to opportunities for additional gift planning or referrals.
  • Seek larger contributions to support the ongoing initiatives of the Straz Center.
  • Develop and refine policies related to endowment and planned gifts, including acceptance policies.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Stay informed about the latest developments in planned giving strategies and legal considerations.
  • Remain updated on trends and issues affecting the performing arts sector and the Straz Center's mission.
  • Contribute to team efforts in planning and development, participating in decision-making processes collaboratively.
  • Assist with departmental functions and special events as needed to ensure smooth operations.

Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of planned giving instruments is preferred.
  • Demonstrated professionalism, integrity, and the ability to foster positive relationships with stakeholders.
  • Exceptional leadership, communication, and organizational skills.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree required.
  • A minimum of seven years of fundraising experience with a proven track record in securing major and/or planned gifts.
  • Advanced knowledge of major gift solicitation and capital campaign fundraising is a plus.
