As an integral member of the interdisciplinary healthcare team, the Ambulatory Care Associate (ACA) provides compassionate, patient-centered care under the supervision of a Registered Nurse. This role encompasses both direct and indirect patient care activities, ensuring high-quality and safe healthcare delivery that aligns with an exceptional patient experience. The ACA is expected to demonstrate proficiency in patient-centered care, teamwork, effective communication, evidence-based practices, safety protocols, and informatics. These competencies are defined by the scope of practice and the necessary knowledge, skills, and attitudes required for the role.
Key Responsibilities:
- 1. Patient-Centered Care: The ACA is responsible for delivering care that respects individual values and preferences, engaging patients as active partners in their care.
- 1.1 Collaborate with registered nurses and licensed providers to obtain specific care requirements tailored to individual patient needs.
- 2. Effective Communication: The ACA fosters respectful interactions with patients, families, and healthcare professionals to enhance the overall patient experience.

- 3. Team Collaboration: The ACA works within nursing and interdisciplinary teams, promoting open communication and mutual respect.

- 4. Quality and Safety: The ACA minimizes risks to patients and staff through effective performance and adherence to high reliability organization (HRO) principles.
- 4.1 Use equipment proficiently to support safe patient care.
- 5. Informatics: The ACA employs technology to communicate essential information and support decision-making processes.
- 5.1 Maintain competencies in clinical applications relevant to the role.
- 6. Professional Development: The ACA is accountable for maintaining clinical competencies in care delivery.
- 6.1 Take responsibility for personal practice and ongoing professional growth.
- 7. Clinical Responsibilities: The ACA performs various clinical functions as per the defined scope of practice, including patient preparation and vital sign assessments.
- 7.1 Execute standardized rooming protocols to prepare patients for their visits.
- 8. Administrative Duties: The ACA undertakes clerical tasks as required by clinical service needs.
- 8.1 Manage patient medical records and ensure accurate documentation.
- 9. Environmental Support: The ACA assists in maintaining a safe and organized clinical environment.
- 9.1 Prepare instruments and equipment according to departmental protocols.
Education: High school diploma or GED required. Completion of an accredited medical assisting program, Nursing Assistant Program, or Patient Care Associate Training is preferred.
Experience: Preferred 12-18 months of experience in a similar role, ideally in an outpatient clinical setting.
Licensure: Current medical assisting credentials recognized by the Connecticut Department of Public Health are preferred.
Special Skills: Effective communication skills with patients, families, and healthcare teams are essential. Flexibility in adjusting priorities based on patient needs is crucial.
Physical Demands: Ability to lift a minimum of 40 pounds and perform tasks requiring physical endurance and dexterity.
Additional Information: Prior experience as a CNA or MA is required, with a preference for acute care experience.
