Position Overview
The Senior Vice President of Taxation plays a crucial role in managing a portfolio of high net worth clients. This position necessitates frequent client interactions and a comprehensive understanding of trust and agency account management, which includes fiduciary accounting, finance, real estate, and estate planning. A key objective for this role is to foster new business opportunities through independent efforts and collaboration with various organizational teams, leveraging professional networks and direct outreach to potential clients.
Department Leadership
Reporting directly to the CFO, the Director of Tax Strategy oversees a dedicated team within the Tax Department. This team is responsible for delivering tax projections, alerts, summaries, and expert advice to clients. The Director's leadership encompasses five core functions: (1) tax preparation, (2) tax advisory services, (3) brokerage 1099 production, (4) IRA documentation, and (5) tax processing.
Key Responsibilities
- Engage with Client Advisors and clients on various tax advisory matters concerning ultra-high net worth individuals, trusts, estates, gifting, and partnerships.
- Drive business development initiatives by cultivating relationships with prospective clients and referral sources, supporting Client Advisors in client meetings, and participating in marketing and networking events.
- Provide oversight to the Tax Compliance, 1099, IRA, and Tax Processing functions.
- Draft and disseminate tax alerts regarding legislative changes and tax mitigation strategies.
- Develop and maintain comprehensive tax summaries for clients, addressing charitable contributions, gift and estate tax credits, and comparative tax calculations.
- Conduct research on recent tax law changes and proposals at both federal and state levels.
- Review corporate tax filings and prepare specific state and local returns.
- Utilize corporate technology platforms to maintain accurate records and provide accessible tax resources.
- Collaborate with external tax preparation firms and legal advisors.
- Travel as necessary to engage with clients and corporate offices.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution; a strong academic record is preferred.
- Master's degree in Taxation or Juris Doctorate is advantageous but not mandatory.
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation is required.
Experience Requirements
- A minimum of 10 years of relevant experience, preferably with a Big Four accounting firm.
- In-depth knowledge of federal, state, and local tax laws related to income taxation of trusts, individuals, and pass-through entities.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, Word, SharePoint, and OneDrive.
- Familiarity with tax preparation software, including CCH and Thomson Reuters.
- Exceptional writing and verbal communication skills.
