Position Overview

This role is designed to deliver extensive testing engineering support to the Proterra Customer Engineering Validation Team. You will be tasked with executing characterization, validation, and safety assessments on innovative electric vehicle technologies. This position represents the company, ensuring the utmost safety standards at all designated locations and acting as the primary Validation Engineer for test activities that support Proterra.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Assist Validation Engineering with the installation and verification of instrumentation on vehicles and systems.
  • Support both onsite and offsite testing as necessary, including durability assessments, chamber evaluations, and partner program validation efforts.
  • Engage actively and take ownership of all responsibilities within the scope of work.
  • Formulate engineering validation and characterization strategies for Proterra's electric vehicle technologies.
  • Ensure clear and precise documentation related to testing processes.
  • Facilitate vehicle-level assessments to validate Proterra battery packs within customer platforms.
  • Create DVP&Rs and implement suitable testing methodologies and equipment for execution.
  • Maintain clear and concise records related to tests, including detailed reports on components under evaluation and their status.
  • Document identified failures thoroughly and collaborate with engineering teams to drive resolutions.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve issues with testing equipment.
  • Prioritize and complete tasks effectively to meet established deadlines.
  • Engage with a diverse range of individuals and teams to communicate results effectively.
  • Perform additional tasks as assigned by management.

  • The Customer Engineering Team serves as the direct interface to the customer, representing various Proterra internal development groups from a technical standpoint.
  • You will report to the Validation Engineering Manager and work alongside other engineering team members.
  • This position allows for a hybrid work arrangement, combining time spent at testing facilities and remote work.

  • Strong organizational, time management, and documentation skills.
  • Sound judgment and exceptional problem-solving capabilities.
  • Excellent communication skills in English.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in relevant Engineering disciplines or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum of 2 years of testing experience in the automotive or transportation sectors, with an understanding of high voltage storage systems.
  • Familiarity with digital and analog interfaces for PCs and testing systems.
  • Knowledge of high voltage products and automotive CAN communication networks.
  • Experience in an R&D testing environment.
  • Proficient in conducting tests and resolving issues independently.
Preferred Skills:
  • Experience with P-CAN explorer or Canalyzer.
  • Familiarity with testing instrumentation and data acquisition systems such as Dewesoft (e.g., temperature, flow, pressure, current, voltage).
  • Knowledge of electrical and electronic circuit components.
  • HV safety training.
Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to work various shifts as needed; may require travel to different locations.
  • Capability to lift up to 25 pounds and occasionally 50 pounds.
  • Able to walk, stand, crouch, bench, kneel, lift, carry, and reach as necessary in both large and confined spaces.
  • Good hand-eye coordination and ability to discern color variations, depth perception, and visual items at various distances.
  • Manual dexterity with occasional repetitive finger movements.
Environmental Considerations:
  • Ability to work in a manufacturing environment with extreme temperature conditions.
  • Willingness to wear protective clothing or respiratory equipment as required.
  • Exposure to irritant chemicals, gases, etc.
Travel Requirements: 10-20%
