Job Title: Curator of Native American Art

Seattle Art Museum is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Curator of Native American Art to join our team. As a key member of our curatorial department, you will be responsible for the development and implementation of exhibitions, programs, and educational initiatives related to Native American art and culture.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop and implement exhibitions, programs, and educational initiatives related to Native American art and culture.
  • Curate and install exhibitions, including the selection of artworks, design of exhibition layouts, and writing of exhibition texts.
  • Collaborate with artists, communities, and other stakeholders to ensure that exhibitions and programs are culturally sensitive and accurate.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with Native American communities, artists, and organizations to ensure that the Museum's collections and exhibitions are representative and inclusive.
  • Conduct research and writing on Native American art and culture, including the development of exhibition catalogs, articles, and other publications.
  • Work with the Museum's education department to develop and implement educational programs and activities related to Native American art and culture.
  • Collaborate with other departments, including collections, conservation, and marketing, to ensure that exhibitions and programs are well-integrated and effective.
Requirements:
  • Master's degree in Art History or a related field with a focus on Native American art and culture.
  • At least 2 years of experience as a curator or curatorial assistant, preferably in a museum or cultural institution.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholders, including artists, communities, and Museum staff.
  • Strong research and writing skills, with the ability to conduct research and write about Native American art and culture.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, with a strong commitment to collaboration and communication.
  • Knowledge of Native American art history, cultural history, and current cultural practices, as well as language and cultural protocols.
