Job Summary

Fisk University seeks a highly skilled and dedicated professional to serve as a Counselor for Academic Excellence and Student Performance. This individual will work closely with the Living Learning Center Coordinators, Academic Support Services, Academic Success Center, and LEAD Program to implement retention strategies and activities that complement the University's student retention and academic excellence initiative.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and Implement Retention Strategies: Develop effective practices for student retention to ensure that support services are responsive to students' needs.
  • Design and Deliver Learning Workshops: Identify, recommend, and implement learning workshops, supplemental instructional initiatives, and other activities dependent on students' needs.
  • Collaborate with University Departments: Work with other University departments, including Academic Departments, Financial Aid, Business Office, and Registrar, to implement services aimed at increasing retention, particularly for first-year students.
  • Prepare Reports and Documentation: Prepare correspondence, reports, and other documentation as it relates to retention.
  • Maintain Student Records: Keep accurate student records and input confidential student information into a computerized tracking system.
  • Utilize Early Alert System: Utilize the EAB system as an early alert system for all students.
  • Support Student Mentoring and Tutoring: Work with student mentoring and tutoring programs to support students.
  • Proctor Testing and Assessment: Proctor testing and assessment during Orientation or other scheduled times.
  • Facilitate Registration Activities: Facilitate and promote registration activities.
  • Coordinate Workshops and Seminars: Ensure coordination of workshops and/or seminars in the areas of writing, study, and test-taking skills.
Secondary Responsibilities
  • Assist with Recruitment and Promotional Materials: Assist with the development of recruitment and promotional materials.
  • Develop Student Tracking System: Work with IT personnel to develop a student tracking system and other computerized tools, as well as training modes for personnel involved in retention activities.
  • Work Flexible Hours: Work occasional evening and weekend hours.
  • Refer Students to Resources: Refer students to appropriate campus and off-campus resources.
  • Perform Other Duties: Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • Master's Degree: Possession of a master's degree in a relevant discipline from an accredited institution is required.
  • Relevant Experience: 3 to 5 years of relevant experience in a college/university setting (preferred) will be considered, including K-12 experience.
  • Licenses or Certificates: None required.
  • Background and Credit Check: A background and/or credit check will be required of the successful applicant.
Work Environment

Normal office conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
