Principal Engineer - Gum Technology Specialist

The Principal Engineer - Gum Technology Specialist plays a pivotal role within the Global Research and Development Team at Mars Incorporated. This position is integral to the Global Process Development and Deployment team, focusing on the creation and implementation of innovative processes that support global initiatives in Innovation, Freedom to Operate, and Sustainability. Additionally, this role addresses complex regional projects that necessitate advanced process development knowledge.

This position is responsible for the formulation, management, and enhancement of Global Process Specifications and standards. The Principal Engineer collaborates with project teams, both regional and global, to translate process design and development into effective deployment strategies. Mentoring and coaching R&D associates, as well as collaborating with internal and external engineering partners, are key aspects of this role to establish standards for current and future process requirements.

Working closely with various departments such as Product Development, Factory Innovation, Science and Technology, Quality and Food Safety, and Supply Chain, the Principal Engineer is tasked with designing, developing, and executing processes from initial concept to the final product delivery. The role may also involve project implementation and oversight of external manufacturing sites.

This position is recognized as the global authority on Gum technology, providing support and consultation when deviations from established process specifications occur, ensuring that any modifications to equipment or process settings maintain the essential quality attributes of the product.

Key Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, chemical engineering, or a related technical field such as chemistry or food science is required.
  • Preferred: Master's degree in engineering, chemical engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Demonstrated expertise in gum processing technology.
  • Proven project management experience, typically acquired through a minimum of 10 years in leading New Product Development (NPD) projects as a technical contributor on cross-functional teams.
  • At least 10 years of hands-on experience in developing and successfully launching new products, packaging, and processes in relevant sectors.
  • Experience in developing new processes utilizing both existing and innovative technologies.
  • Strong influencing, negotiation, and results-driven skills.
  • Ability to creatively and collaboratively solve problems.
  • Experience in factory settings, laboratories, or pilot plants.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, along with a strong learning agility.
  • Proven track record in managing complex projects through execution with cross-functional teams.
  • Strong collaboration and partnership skills with cross-functional team members across R&D, Supply, and Commercial.
  • Additional Preferred: Six Sigma Black Belt, experience with external vendors, hands-on experience in launching new processes in the FMCG sector, and experience in food innovation.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Mentoring and coaching process development and engineering associates.
  • Providing training on process technologies through both classroom and hands-on methods.
  • Supporting AHC and collaborating with Supply (IE, Regional Engineering, Site Engineering) and Factory Innovation.
  • Establishing Global Specifications Standards with foresight into future process and technology advancements.
  • Acting as a technical expert for global process development in specific technologies and unit operations.
  • Staying informed about advancements in food technologies, packaging, design, and category trends by building strong partnerships with vendors and equipment suppliers.
  • Accountable for executing process development activities and ensuring successful commercialization of allocated programs at both internal and external sites.
  • Maintaining and implementing Global Process Standards for core products and new innovations.
  • Ensuring process development designs yield products that meet consumer, brand, and quality key attributes.
  • Supporting Factory Innovation and Engineering in optimizing current and future assets while delivering global process specifications for new, modified, or existing manufacturing processes.
  • Collaborating with Global Supply Chain and S&T to identify and deliver new or optimized process specifications, including digital transformation initiatives.
  • Addressing complex regional process development needs and troubleshooting when manufacturing processes fail to meet designed specifications.
  • Connecting with peers in other regions and R&D functions to share best practices in support of global deployment of new innovations and FTO programs.
  • Utilizing Six Sigma tools for process troubleshooting.
  • Working with Supply Chain to design and develop process specifications for agile and concept-scale production lines.
  • Partnering with the R&D Digital Transformation Team to create a digital roadmap that supports the use of new digital tools for data collection, analysis, predictive modeling, and automation.
  • Coaching in competency building for new sites, planning, and delivering training.
  • Potential to develop into a Digital Engineer specializing in the design of applications that utilize digital technology, including digital automation, data analytics, AI, digital twin technology, and machine learning.
