About the Role

The Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Director of Earned Media to join our team. As a key member of our Communications Department, you will play a critical role in developing and executing our multi-tiered earned media strategy, elevating our organization's position as a leading voice on racial justice.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive earned media strategy to position the Lawyers' Committee as a thought leader on racial justice issues.
  • Mentor and manage staff members focused on media relations and earned media, providing guidance and support to ensure their success.
  • Craft and execute high-impact media campaigns to promote the organization's work, values, and principles, highlighting our wins and impact inside and outside the courtroom.
  • Proactively identify and secure interview and speaking opportunities for staff to showcase the organization's expertise and voice on racial justice matters.
  • Provide media training and coaching to staff, helping them to effectively communicate our message and values.
  • Work closely with the Vice President of Communications to identify and pursue opportunities to elevate the organization's voice and key messages.
  • Manage outside media consultants and build relationships with top national reporters, producers, and editors to support the Communications department's goals and deliverables.
  • Track and monitor the outcomes of media initiatives, using data to inform and refine our strategy.
  • Stay up-to-date on the latest trends and developments in the media landscape, identifying opportunities to stay ahead of the curve and maintain our competitive edge.
Requirements and Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, public relations, or communications, or a combination of 4 years education and experience.
  • Minimum 8 years of relevant experience in press, communications, or media, with a strong understanding of the media landscape and coverage related to social and racial justice issues.
  • Established relationships with reporters and editors, with a proven track record of building and maintaining strong media relationships.
  • Minimum 5 years of leadership, supervisory, or project management experience, with a strong ability to lead, motivate, and mentor team members.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills, with the ability to craft compelling narratives and messaging.
  • Strong attention to detail and a commitment to excellence, with a solid and well-articulated commitment to social justice.
  • Ability to translate complex concepts for broad audiences, with a track record of problem-solving and managing multiple priorities.
  • Experience with online tools, including Cision, Canva, and WordPress, as well as social media platforms such as Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn.
