Job Description

The LAWYERS' COMMITTEE FOR CIVIL RIGHTS UNDER LAW is a leading national racial justice legal organization. Formed in 1963 at the request of President John F. Kennedy, the organization uses legal advocacy to achieve racial justice, fighting inside and outside the courts to ensure that Black people and other people of color have the voice, opportunity, and power to make the promises of our democracy real.

About the Role

The Director of Earned Media works closely with and supports the Vice President of Communications to develop and execute the organization's multi-tiered earned media strategy, helping to elevate the organization's position as the leading organization on racial justice. The Director must demonstrate a deep commitment to racial justice and social justice, possess strong initiative and drive, work quickly and creatively, with a track record of success and impact as a media professional.

Responsibilities
  • Develop and manage the execution of the organization's media strategy to position the organization as a thought leader.
  • Mentor and manage staff members focused on media relations and earned media.
  • Craft, implement, and track high-impact and effective media campaigns for promoting the organization's work, values, principles, wins, and its work inside and outside the courtroom.
  • Proactively seize on and cultivate interview and speaking opportunities for staff to help showcase the organization's work, expertise, and voice on racial justice matters.
  • Identify, secure, and provide one-on-one and group media training opportunities for staff.
  • Support and work closely with the staff to elevate the organization's voice and key messages.
  • Proactively solicit insight from team members across the organization to identify current priorities and opportunities for Communications to support.
  • Manage outside media consultants and build relationships with top national reporters, producers, correspondents, and editors in support of the Communications department's goals and deliverables.
  • Track, monitor, and report on the outcomes of media initiatives to help determine impact and to help refine strategy.
  • Monitor new trends in a rapidly evolving media industry and identify and implement strategies that keep the organization's media strategy on the cutting edge.
  • Write and edit op-eds.
  • Draft quotes and talking points for President and Executive Director for interviews and other media opportunities.
  • Assist with ensuring effective coverage of the organization's work in an increasingly fast-paced and rapidly evolving news cycle.
  • Assist Vice President of Communications with crisis communications plans and implementation as needed.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to diversity and inclusion within the office using a personal approach that values all individuals and respects differences.
Requirements and Competencies
  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, public relations, or communications preferred or a combination of 4 years education and experience.
  • Minimum 8 years of relevant experience in press, communications, or media.
  • Understanding and experience with the media landscape and coverage in relationship to social and racial justice issues and non-profit organizations.
  • Established relationships and ability to build relationships with reporters and editors.
  • A minimum of 5 years of leadership, supervisory or project management experience.
  • Ability to lead, motivate, and mentor team members, and an ability to collaborate with staff across teams.
  • Pursuing opportunities to tell the stories of client and communities impacted by the organization's work.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and a commitment to excellence.
  • Solid and well-articulated commitment to social justice.
  • Track record as a problem solver with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Experience with online tools including Cision, Canva and WordPress, in addition to social media sites including, but not limited to, Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn.
  • Ability to translate complex concepts for broad audiences.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.
  • Ability to shepherd projects from inception to completion.
