Position Overview

Salary Range: $125,000 - $185,000

The Center for a New American Security (CNAS) is in search of a Director of Communications to spearhead the development, integration, and execution of a comprehensive suite of public relations initiatives aimed at enhancing the strategic positioning and outreach of the organization, its leadership, and its research endeavors.

This role encompasses the formulation of communication strategies and activities, which include traditional media relations, event management, and digital engagement. The Director will oversee a team of four full-time professionals, reporting directly to the Executive Vice President while collaborating closely with the executive leadership and senior research staff.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership and Vision

  • Direct CNAS's overarching strategy to elevate its brand identity and broaden awareness of its programs and initiatives.
  • Establish a significant presence for CNAS within targeted communities and media channels.
  • Design and implement detailed communication plans supporting research projects, encompassing a full spectrum of public affairs activities.
  • Collaborate with the Development team to craft marketing strategies and materials that promote partnerships and individual contributions.
  • Guide and mentor communications staff, fostering a collaborative and supportive environment.
  • Develop and manage departmental budgets, ensuring alignment with planned expenditures.
  • Coordinate with subject matter experts to amplify the impact of their research.
  • Facilitate collaboration among various teams, managing competing deadlines effectively.
  • Lead the creation of communication plans for new initiatives.
  • Formulate CNAS's approach to paid media and expand its media partnerships.

Media Relations

  • Build and maintain relationships with journalists and media outlets, positioning CNAS experts as reliable sources.
  • Oversee the creation and dissemination of press materials related to CNAS's reports and major announcements.
  • Manage crisis communications and rapid response efforts, ensuring timely media training for staff.
  • Enhance visibility of CNAS events through strategic media partnerships.

Digital Media Strategy

  • Ensure that CNAS's digital media strategy aligns with the organization's mission and outreach goals.
  • Develop promotional strategies for new media formats, including video and podcasts.
  • Utilize analytics to track trends and improve content performance.
  • Oversee advertising initiatives and manage website content and vendor relationships.

Event Management and External Engagement

  • Oversee the execution of CNAS events, including major public gatherings.
  • Act as a liaison for key external partners and promote opportunities for CNAS experts to engage with Congressional committees.
  • Implement a Congressional engagement strategy to promote relevant publications and events.
Qualifications
  • A minimum of five years of experience in communications.
  • A bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, public relations, marketing, or a related field is required.
  • Strong judgment in task evaluation and decision-making.
  • Knowledge of national security, defense, and foreign policy issues.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proven ability to engage with senior stakeholders and colleagues at all levels.
  • Extensive experience in writing and editing.
  • Demonstrated leadership in developing and executing strategic communications plans.
  • Understanding of media dynamics and newsworthiness.
  • Familiarity with congressional relations is a plus.
  • Results-driven with a collaborative problem-solving approach.
  • Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as needed.
  • Experience managing diverse teams.
  • Legal authorization to work in the United States.
