Position Overview:
The Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking a dedicated Postdoctoral Research Associate in the field of Environmental Sciences. This role involves conducting advanced research focused on the quantification and prediction of forest soil biogeochemical processes that influence nutrient and toxic element ecosystem services within the forests of the eastern United States.

Key Responsibilities:
- Engage in comprehensive studies to understand the spatial and temporal variability of ecosystem services, essential for optimizing land management practices.
- Utilize existing datasets and generate new data to explore nutrient cycling and toxic element sequestration.
- Collaborate with a multi-institutional team to collect and integrate geochemical and physicochemical soil measurements.
- Develop predictive models for the transport and sequestration of nutrients and toxic elements across various forest ecosystems, from southern to northeastern states.
- Mentor undergraduate and graduate students, participate in field sampling, and contribute to all phases of research projects, from conceptualization to publication in peer-reviewed journals.

Qualifications:
- A PhD in Earth or Environmental Sciences, Biogeochemistry, Soil Science, or a related discipline is required.
- Proven ability to work collaboratively within an inclusive team environment, with experience in soil science and analytical chemistry.
- A minimum of two first-author peer-reviewed publications is necessary.
- A valid Driver's License is required for field site travel.

Preferred Skills:
- Background in forest ecosystem science, including coursework and field sampling experience.
- Proficiency in programming and modeling using R, Matlab, or Python is advantageous.
- Demonstrated experience in mentorship and project management.

Physical Requirements:
This position involves a combination of data analysis and technical writing, alongside outdoor field sampling during the growing season. Candidates should be prepared to carry equipment and samples weighing up to 40 lbs. Occasional overnight travel may be required for meetings and field visits.
