Position Overview:
The Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking a dedicated Postdoctoral Research Associate in the field of Environmental Sciences. This role involves conducting advanced research on the quantification and prediction of forest soil biogeochemical processes that influence nutrient and toxic element ecosystem services in forested regions.

Key Responsibilities:
- Investigate the spatial and temporal dynamics of ecosystem services to enhance land management practices.
- Utilize existing and new data sets to analyze nutrient cycling and toxic element sequestration.
- Collaborate with a multi-institutional team to gather and integrate geochemical and physicochemical soil data.
- Employ geospatial tools (e.g., ArcMap, QGIS) and process-based biogeochemistry models (e.g., CENTURY model, PnET) to predict element abundance and transport.
- Mentor undergraduate and graduate students, and engage in fieldwork for soil and tree sampling.
- Attend conferences and contribute to all phases of research projects, from conception to publication in peer-reviewed journals.

Qualifications:
- A PhD in Earth or Environmental Sciences, Biogeochemistry, Soil Science, or a related discipline is required.
- Proven ability to work collaboratively within an inclusive team environment.
- Experience in soil science, analytical chemistry, and physicochemical soil analysis is essential.
- At least two first-author peer-reviewed publications are mandatory.
- A valid Driver's License is necessary for field site travel.

Preferred Qualifications:
- Background in forest ecosystem science, including coursework and field sampling experience.
- Proficiency in programming and modeling with R, Matlab, or Python is advantageous.
- Demonstrated experience in mentorship and project management.

Physical Requirements:
The role involves a combination of data analysis and technical writing, as well as outdoor field sampling during the growing season. Candidates should be prepared to carry equipment and samples weighing up to 40 lbs and may require occasional overnight travel for meetings and laboratory visits.
