Key Responsibilities

  • The Senior Inspector will oversee the work of contractors and fellow inspectors to ensure quality assurance and adherence to contract specifications for VDOT roadway, structure, and bridge construction/maintenance projects, ranging from routine to highly complex, under the guidance of a Construction Quality Control Manager or lead.
  • Work will occur in proximity to active highways, roadways, and water/land bridge construction on a design-build contract, with potential nighttime shifts on a rotational basis.
  • Responsible for preparing detailed daily reports and maintaining diaries to document construction progress, inspection, and testing outcomes.
  • Review daily reports from less experienced inspectors for proper documentation and testing accuracy as necessary.
  • Measure field quantities and prepare necessary records using mathematical calculations.
  • May conduct field-testing such as soil density, concrete field tests, and asphalt testing using VDOT VTM's as needed due to staffing shortages to verify contractor compliance with contract specifications.
  • Monitor and observe specialized and complex field operations, including excavations, pile driving, storm drain installation, asphalt road surfaces, complex rebar and construction field drawings, demolition, grading, tunnel boring operations, and other specialized civil construction tasks.
  • Study complex drawings and specifications, and utilize databases and document control applications to locate relevant specifications and drawings for ongoing work.
  • Attend design-build preparation meetings and assist in the preparation of inspector document packages for quality control observations.
  • May assist in planning and scheduling work and inspection phases with contractor's superintendent and agency personnel.
  • Supervise and assign tasks to junior and less experienced inspectors.
  • Verify that roadway and highway construction complies with drawings, VDOT specifications and standards, special provisions, and contract documents.
  • Advise contractors, other inspectors, and supervisors of nonconformance, deficiencies, and issues, providing reference documents as necessary.
  • Track deficiencies and nonconformance along with their corrective actions; document in Daily Reports.
  • Monitor testing frequency requirements and assign materials technicians and inspectors to conduct tests and make observations as needed.
  • Supervise and oversee Roller Pattern Control Strips for aggregates, pavements, and cement-treated aggregates.
  • Review and inspect asphalt and concrete roadways and bridge decks.
  • Review and inspect complex detailed heavy reinforcing steel and forms prior to concrete placement and sign pour cards.
  • Review lines, grades, dimensions, and elevations using standard survey and field engineering equipment.
  • Enforce the installation of erosion/siltation controls.
  • Enforce temporary traffic control zones and traffic control devices.
  • Prepare checklists and test reports for work activities.
  • Perform other administrative duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Associate's degree in Civil Engineering Technology or a related field.
  • 4 - 8 years of relevant experience required.
  • Pre-employment drug screening is a condition of employment. Background and motor vehicle checks may be required based on the position.

  • Accurately record and report daily forms as per project requirements.
  • Communicate effectively with clients, contractors, staff, and supervisors.
  • Proactively resolve issues at the lowest level.
  • Adhere to project scope, schedule, and budget.
  • Review all work for completeness and accuracy prior to submission.
  • Submit accurate timesheets, mileage, and expense reports on time each week.
  • Conduct daily job site safety reviews and take immediate action to document and resolve issues.
  • Understand OSHA Safety Standards and KCI corporate policies, adhering to them at all times.
  • Maintain all required certifications and participate in training courses as necessary.
  • Understand all applicable industry standards for projects and perform all tasks according to standards and client requirements.
