Key Responsibilities

  • The Senior Inspector will oversee the activities of contractors and fellow inspectors to ensure adherence to quality standards and contract specifications for VDOT roadway, structure, and bridge construction and maintenance projects, ranging from routine to highly complex tasks, under the guidance of a Construction Quality Control Manager or lead.
  • Work will take place in proximity to active highways, roadways, and bridge construction on design-build contracts, with potential nighttime shifts on a rotational basis.
  • Responsible for preparing comprehensive daily reports and maintaining detailed diaries to document construction progress, inspection findings, and testing outcomes.
  • Review reports from less experienced inspectors to ensure proper documentation and testing accuracy when necessary.
  • Measure field quantities and prepare necessary records using mathematical calculations.
  • Conduct field testing, such as soil density, concrete field tests, and asphalt testing, using VDOT VTM's as needed due to staffing shortages to verify contractor compliance with contract specifications.
  • Observe and monitor specialized and complex field operations, including excavations, pile driving, storm drain installation, asphalt road surfaces, complex rebar installations, demolition, grading, tunnel boring, and other specialized civil construction activities.
  • Analyze complex drawings and specifications, utilizing databases and document control applications to locate relevant specifications and drawings for ongoing work.
  • Attend design-build preparation meetings and assist in the preparation of inspector document packages for quality control observations.
  • Support planning and scheduling of work and inspection phases in collaboration with contractor superintendents and agency personnel.
  • Supervise and provide guidance to junior inspectors, assigning tasks and instructions as needed.
  • Ensure roadway and highway construction complies with drawings, VDOT specifications, standards, special provisions, and contract documents.
  • Advise contractors, other inspectors, and supervisors on nonconformance, deficiencies, and issues, providing reference documentation as necessary.
  • Track deficiencies and nonconformance, documenting corrective actions in daily reports.
  • Monitor testing frequency requirements and assign materials technicians and inspectors to conduct tests and make observations as required.
  • Supervise and oversee Roller Pattern Control Strips for aggregates, pavements, and cement-treated aggregates.
  • Review and inspect asphalt and concrete roadways and bridge decks.
  • Inspect complex heavy reinforcing steel and forms prior to concrete placement and sign pour cards.
  • Review lines, grades, dimensions, and elevations using standard surveying and field engineering equipment.
  • Enforce the installation of erosion and siltation controls.
  • Oversee and enforce temporary traffic control zones and devices.
  • Prepare checklists and test reports for work activities.
  • Perform additional administrative duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Associate's degree in Civil Engineering Technology or a related field.
  • 4 to 8 years of relevant experience required.
  • Pre-employment drug screening is a condition of employment. Background and motor vehicle checks may be required based on the position.

  • Accurately document and report daily forms in accordance with project requirements.
  • Communicate effectively with clients, contractors, staff, and supervisors.
  • Proactively address issues at the lowest level.
  • Adhere to project scope, schedule, and budget.
  • Review all work for completeness and accuracy prior to submission.
  • Submit accurate timesheets, mileage, and expense reports on time each week.
  • Conduct daily job site safety reviews and take immediate action to document and resolve issues.
  • Understand and comply with OSHA Safety Standards and KCI corporate policies at all times.
  • Maintain all required certifications and participate in necessary training courses.
  • Understand and apply all relevant industry standards for projects, performing all tasks in accordance with standards and client requirements.
