Key Responsibilities

  • The Senior Inspector will oversee the activities of contractors and fellow inspectors to ensure adherence to quality standards and compliance with contractual obligations for roadway, structure, and bridge construction/maintenance projects, ranging from routine to highly complex, under the guidance of a Construction Quality Control Manager or lead.
  • Work will occur on and around active highways, roadways, and water/land bridge construction under a design-build contract, with potential nighttime shifts on a rotational basis.
  • Responsible for preparing detailed daily reports and maintaining diaries to document construction progress, inspection, and testing outcomes.
  • Review daily reports from less experienced inspectors for accuracy in documentation and testing when necessary.
  • Measure field quantities and prepare essential records utilizing mathematical calculations.
  • May conduct field-testing such as soil density, concrete field tests, and asphalt testing using VDOT VTM's when required due to staffing shortages to ensure contractor compliance with specifications.
  • Observe and monitor specialized and complex fieldwork, including excavations, pile driving, storm drain installation, asphalt road surfaces, and other intricate civil construction tasks.
  • The role necessitates studying complex drawings and specifications and utilizing databases and document control applications to locate relevant specifications and drawings for ongoing work.
  • Attend design-build preparation meetings and assist in preparing inspector document packages for quality control observations.
  • May assist in planning and scheduling work and inspection phases with contractor superintendents and agency personnel.
  • Supervise and assign tasks to junior inspectors, providing guidance and instructions.
  • Ensure that roadway and highway construction complies with drawings, VDOT specifications, standards, special provisions, and contract documents.
  • Notify contractors, other inspectors, and supervisors of any nonconformance, deficiencies, or issues, providing relevant documentation.
  • Track deficiencies and nonconformance, documenting corrective actions in daily reports.
  • Monitor testing frequency requirements and assign materials technicians and inspectors to conduct tests and make observations as necessary.
  • Supervise the implementation of Roller Pattern Control Strips for aggregates, pavements, and cement-treated aggregates.
  • Review and inspect asphalt and concrete roadways and bridge decks.
  • Inspect complex heavy reinforcing steel and forms prior to concrete placement and sign pour cards.
  • Assess lines, grades, dimensions, and elevations using standard surveying and field engineering equipment.
  • Enforce the installation of erosion/siltation controls and temporary traffic control zones and devices.
  • Prepare checklists and test reports for various work activities.
  • Perform additional administrative duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Associate's degree in Civil Engineering Technology or a related field.
  • 4 to 8 years of relevant experience required.
  • Pre-employment drug screening is a condition of employment. Background and motor vehicle checks may be required based on the position.

Performance Expectations

  • Accurately document and report daily forms in accordance with project requirements.
  • Communicate effectively with clients, contractors, staff, and supervisors.
  • Proactively address issues at the lowest level.
  • Adhere to project scope, schedule, and budget constraints.
  • Review all work for completeness and accuracy before submission.
  • Submit accurate timesheets, mileage, and expense reports punctually each week.
  • Conduct daily job site safety reviews and take immediate action to document and resolve issues.
  • Understand and comply with OSHA Safety Standards and KCI corporate policies at all times.
  • Maintain all required certifications and participate in necessary training courses.
  • Understand applicable industry standards for projects and perform all tasks in accordance with these standards and client requirements.
