Role Summary

As a Lead Construction Supervisor, you will play a pivotal role in ensuring that contractors adhere to project specifications by reviewing, interpreting, and enforcing plans and contract documents, facilitating efficient and timely inspections of construction activities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Independently plan, coordinate, inspect, and oversee inspection activities for roadway, structure, and bridge maintenance projects.
  • Monitor contractor performance and schedules to ensure quality assurance and compliance with contract requirements for moderate to complex construction projects, advising contractors on violations and suggesting operational adjustments.
  • Utilize your expertise in inspecting roadways and bridges in accordance with established standards and specifications.
  • Apply engineering principles to document construction activities and perform field measurements of pay items.
  • Propose modifications to construction plans to accommodate field conditions or achieve cost efficiencies.
  • Review and ensure compliance with EEO/DBE documentation as per contract stipulations.
  • Supervise, guide, and evaluate the work of Inspectors and Inspector Trainees.
  • Maintain thorough project records and documentation using relevant project management software.
  • Conduct material testing in accordance with established testing procedures.
  • Implement Best Management Practices for environmental inspections in line with regulatory standards.
  • Ensure safety practices are adhered to during construction activities.
  • Engage with various stakeholders, including local authorities and regulatory bodies.
  • Assist in the development of change orders and the analysis of claims and work orders.

Required Qualifications

  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including day and night shifts.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license with a satisfactory driving record.
  • Ability to pass a criminal history background check.
  • Local travel to job sites is anticipated.

Experience and Education

  • A minimum of 7 years of experience in roadway or bridge construction inspection.
  • Proficiency in operating computer systems and software, including Microsoft Office Suite, as well as field-testing equipment.

Certifications

Ability to obtain relevant certifications, including:

  • Hydraulic Cement Concrete Field – ACI
  • Soils and Aggregate - VDOT
  • ESC Inspector – DEQ
  • SWM Inspector - DEQ
  • Pavement Marking – VDOT
  • Intermediate Work Zone – VDOT
  • Flagger - VDOT
  • Guardrail Installation (GRIT) - VDOT
  • Asphalt Field Levels I and II - VDOT
  • Slurry Surfacing – VDOT
  • Surface Treatment - VDOT
  • 10-hour OSHA Safety

Physical Requirements

The individual in this role can expect to engage in sitting and using hands for more than one-third of the day, while standing or walking for over two-thirds of the day. Effective communication and listening skills are essential for more than two-thirds of the day. The ability to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, or reach will be required for less than two-thirds of the day.

This position may require lifting items up to 70 pounds on an occasional basis.

Visual acuity is necessary for tasks such as reviewing reports and forms, as well as monitoring information displayed on a computer screen. The ability to distinguish colors, depth perception, peripheral vision, and the capacity to focus on distant objects are also important.
