Key Responsibilities:

Oversee the dispatch, drivers, warehouse, and administrative personnel associated with the transportation division.
* Ensure timely and complete deliveries to cross-docking facilities.
* Cultivate cross-departmental relationships to enhance customer service and reduce costs.

Monitor and maintain the out-of-service reports for the fleet.
* Implement lean process enhancements.
* Minimize variable costs within the department.
* Maintain weekly driver hours to facilitate open communication with drivers.
* Design and conduct driver training programs along with annual recertifications.
* Establish relevant metrics for safety, cost, and service.
* Track all employee safety performance and perform root cause analyses with actionable solutions for any incidents leading to damage or injury.
* Monitor and manage fleet utilization.
* Create and execute measurable training protocols for all roles.
* Develop and uphold standard operating procedures for transportation.
* Engage in monthly ride-alongs with drivers.
* Oversee and manage all key performance indicators related to transportation, including costs.
* Generate routing manifests and assess routes to ensure all customer delivery commitments are fulfilled.
* Maintain strong communication with drivers, warehouse staff, and sales teams.
* Supervise all scheduled daily deliveries to ensure customer time commitments are honored.
* Analyze details surrounding lost shipments, missed deliveries, and unmet time commitments to determine if process modifications are necessary.
* Ensure all drivers utilize various fleet management software systems and adhere to the established procedures.
* Regularly evaluate and adjust route configurations for optimization.
* Standardize routes to help reduce those under 8 hours.
* Clearly communicate and enforce driver safety requirements.
* Stay updated with all DOT regulations and ensure driver compliance.
* Responsible for the recruitment, training, and development of direct reports.
* Assist in coordinating maintenance and preventative maintenance for all fleet vehicles.
* Ensure all staff have the necessary tools to perform their jobs effectively.
* Conduct annual certifications for all drivers.
* Collaborate with the Shop Steward on union contract matters.
* Schedule regular meetings with drivers.
* Undertake additional projects and duties as assigned by the Director of Transportation and VP of Operations.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree preferred, focusing on business management and/or supply chain, or equivalent knowledge through relevant experience and training.
  • 3 to 5 years of prior experience managing in a unionized environment.
  • Understanding of contractual bargaining agreements is essential.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Strong understanding of fleet maintenance.
  • Experience with GPS tracking systems.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment:

  • Ability to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods throughout the shift.
  • Capability to use hands for data entry via a traditional keyboard.
  • Able to lift, push, and pull materials and objects weighing up to 50 lbs., and heavier weights with appropriate equipment.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, reach, and climb to perform various tasks.
  • Capability to operate powered industrial trucks safely; training will be provided.
  • This position is primarily performed in general office and distribution warehouse settings.
