Job Summary

The Salvation Army is seeking a qualified After School Mentor to facilitate activities that nurture the personal and academic development of students through STEAM activities, homework, and subject tutoring.

Key Responsibilities
  • Organize and lead group STEAM activities in a specific subject, including hands-on projects and experiments.
  • Lead focused group STEAM activities with assigned youth, promoting teamwork and collaboration.
  • Monitor and interact with youth at all times, addressing and handling behavior issues promptly.
  • Record attendance of students and maintain accurate records.
  • Attend and participate in special events as a leader, promoting The Salvation Army's mission and values.
  • Communicate behavior issues to the Program Director or Activities Specialist.
  • Assist with periodical clean-up throughout the afternoon, maintaining a safe and healthy environment.
  • Ensure the children's safety is a top priority at all times, adhering to Safe From Harm policies.
  • Lead and/or participate in assigned programs within the after-school program, as delegated by the Program Director and/or Activities Specialist.
  • Attend trainings and meetings as directed by the Program Director, staying up-to-date on best practices and policies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, related to youth programming and development.
Requirements
  • Associate degree in education, child development, or a related field, or equivalent work experience with youth activity and programming.
  • Significant experience working with middle school youth, preferably in STEAM programming.
  • Ability to efficiently and effectively manage people and projects, with excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Team player, self-starter, and ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Interest and ability to work with people of diverse racial, ethnic, and socio-economic backgrounds in a sensitive and culturally appropriate manner.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including experience or capacity to demonstrate positive interpersonal skills and work as a cooperative team member.
  • Proficiency in computer software applications, including email, MS Office, and Internet platforms.
Physical Demands/Work Environment

This position requires the ability to keep up with the activities of the youth, engaging in daily activities and sports provided by the after-school program. The work environment includes indoor and outdoor activities, with a loud noise level. The individual must be able to frequently lift up to 25 pounds and occasionally up to 50 pounds.

The use of Office and Computer Equipment is necessary, with close vision required. Work may be performed indoors and occasionally outdoors to attend meetings.
