Job Summary:

The Salvation Army is seeking a dedicated and passionate individual to serve as an After School Mentor, responsible for facilitating activities that nurture the personal and academic development of students through STEAM activities, homework, and subject tutoring.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Organize and lead group STEAM activities in a specific subject, including hands-on projects and experiments.
  • Lead focused group STEAM activities with assigned youth, promoting critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Monitor and interact with youth at all times, addressing and handling behavior issues promptly.
  • Record attendance of students and maintain accurate records.
  • Attend and participate in special events as a leader, promoting a positive and inclusive environment.
  • Communicate behavior issues to the Program Director or Activities Specialist.
  • Assist with periodical clean-up throughout the afternoon, maintaining a safe and organized environment.
  • Ensure the children's safety is a top priority at all times, adhering to Safe From Harm policies.
  • Lead and/or participate in assigned programs within the after-school program, as delegated by the Program Director and/or Activities Specialist.
  • Attend trainings and meetings as directed by the Program Director, staying up-to-date on best practices and policies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, related to youth programming.

Requirements:

  • Associate degree in education, child development, or a related field, or equivalent work experience with youth activity and programming.
  • Significant experience working with middle school youth, preferably in STEAM programming.
  • Ability to efficiently and effectively manage people and projects, with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Team player, self-starter, and ability to work with minimal supervision, with a passion for fulfilling The Salvation Army's mission.
  • Proficiency in computer software applications, including email, MS Office, and Internet platforms.

Physical Demands/Work Environment:

This position requires the ability to engage in daily activities and sports provided by the after-school program, with frequent lifting of up to 25 pounds and occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds.

The work environment includes indoor and outdoor activities, with a loud noise level, and requires the ability to talk and listen, stand, walk, sit, and use hands.
