Position Overview

Role Summary: The Oncology Specialty Clinical Pharmacist will deliver specialized pharmaceutical care services within the outpatient dispensary, adhering to established protocols in collaboration with a multidisciplinary healthcare team. This role involves managing and dispensing oncology oral and supportive drug therapies, providing patient education, and ensuring the delivery of high-quality, evidence-based pharmaceutical care. Independent judgment and decision-making are essential components of this position.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Facilitates evidence-based and cost-effective outpatient oncology drug therapy through active participation in treatment decision-making with the healthcare team.
  • Evaluates patient-specific drug therapy management plans under approved treatment protocols, recommending modifications based on comprehensive patient assessments.
  • Enhances medication regimen effectiveness and clinical outcomes across various cancer diagnoses.
  • Assesses the appropriateness of medication administration routes, strengths, dosages, and frequencies based on clinical data and patient characteristics.
  • Understands specialty pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs) and formulary requirements, recommending alternative medications as necessary.
  • Secures prior authorizations for oncology medications by collaborating with PBMs and manufacturer assistance programs.
  • Documents pharmacist interventions and communicates findings with prescribers, suggesting alternatives to current treatment plans as needed.
  • Promotes patient adherence to medication regimens through counseling and motivational interviewing techniques.
  • Designs and monitors therapeutic drug plans to improve patient outcomes through direct and telephonic interactions.
  • Conducts thorough medication history inquiries and responds to oncology drug information requests from healthcare providers.
  • Implements systematic procedures for retrieving and assessing drug information.
  • Collaborates with healthcare professionals to evaluate the quality and effectiveness of drug regimens.
  • Identifies and resolves medication-related issues, ensuring optimal therapeutic outcomes.
  • Coordinates laboratory monitoring of drug therapy, including relevant drug-related tests.
  • Evaluates the efficacy of drug therapies and anticipates potential side effects.
  • Participates in presentations for committees focused on pharmacy and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Analyzes oncology pharmacy data to identify opportunities for enhancing patient care.
General Responsibilities:
  • Engages in operational and clinical projects aligned with departmental needs.
  • Contributes to the development and delivery of specialty pharmacy education for healthcare providers and staff.
  • Ensures continuous improvement in the quality of specialty pharmaceutical care services.
  • Provides insights related to technology utilization for documenting clinical pharmacy outcomes.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • Pharm D degree required.
  • PGY-1 Residency preferred.
  • Active NJ State Board of Pharmacy license required.
  • Board Certification in Ambulatory Care or Pharmacotherapy required; other specialties considered.
  • Certified Specialty Pharmacist credentials required.
  • MTM Certification from the American Pharmaceutical Association preferred.
  • Proficient communication skills in English, both verbal and written.
  • Experience with standard office equipment and technology in a Windows environment.
  • Preferred experience in specialty clinical pharmacy, particularly in retail or PBM settings (5+ years).
  • Adherence to local, state, and federal pharmacy practice regulations.
Travel Requirements: Occasional travel to various company or client locations may be necessary.
