ROLE SUMMARY:
Under general oversight, the Clinical Nurse Specialist delivers expert nursing care to patients, adhering to both national and organizational standards and guidelines pertinent to specialty regulations.
Exhibits a comprehensive understanding of physiological, psychological, and developmental variances across patient demographics, including late adolescence, adulthood, middle age, and senior citizens.
Collaborates with a multidisciplinary team to assess and manage the therapeutic needs of patients and their families. Upholds and supports the US Oncology Compliance Program, including the Code of Ethics and Business Standards.Key Responsibilities:
- Strategize, execute, coordinate, assess, and enhance the continuity of care in alignment with established standards and practices. Conduct health assessments by engaging patients in discussions about their current health status and medical history. Document nursing assessments and interventions accurately.
- Analyze and communicate the findings from health assessments, physical examinations, relevant laboratory results, radiographic data, and psychosocial evaluations of assigned patients to the healthcare provider. Identify patient and family needs, providing educational resources and instructional materials.
- Offer emotional and psychological support to patients and their families while ensuring patient confidentiality. Prepare and administer treatments under the guidance and supervision of a physician.
- Administer medications and blood products with precision, ensuring correct dosages, routes, and techniques. Confirm pre-authorization and obtain necessary consent forms prior to administering treatments when applicable. Adjust dosages as needed by evaluating patient conditions, reviewing lab results, consulting treatment protocols, and discussing modifications with the physician.
- Maintain thorough documentation of patient care and treatments provided. Understand reimbursement processes and ensure accurate charge capture.
- Ensure a well-maintained work environment. Replenish supplies as necessary. Adhere to OSHA regulations when handling hazardous materials and follow all disinfection protocols. Maintain equipment in accordance with quality control standards. Support clinical operations and patient care.
- Manage patient medication refill requests from pharmacies and document relevant information in patient records. Assist physicians during examinations and procedures. Ensure efficient patient flow in and out of examination rooms.
- Coordinate and schedule consultations, pre-tests, diagnostic procedures, referrals, and follow-up appointments for patients. Triage patient inquiries as needed and document pertinent information in patient records. Facilitate communication between patients, families, and the interdisciplinary team, coordinating services related to patient care. Assist patients in accessing community resources.
- Foster interprofessional collaboration. Assist and collaborate with clinical research initiatives. Serve as a resource for LPNs/LVNs and medical assistants. Provide nursing coverage for satellite offices as required. Act as a mentor/preceptor, offering guidance to less experienced nursing staff.
- Perform additional duties as assigned. Engage in professional development activities and maintain up-to-date knowledge in oncology nursing through ongoing educational opportunities.
Qualifications:
Minimum Requirements:
Education/Training - Graduate from an accredited nursing program, BSN preferred. Active RN state license and current registration with the State Board of Nursing. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. Commitment to ongoing education is essential.
Professional Experience: 3-5 years of nursing experience, with a preference for at least one year in oncology. Specialized knowledge or certification in oncology is preferred.
