POSITION SUMMARY

A Peer Support Specialist for Substance Use will collaborate with both behavioral health and primary care professionals to provide services aimed at assisting clients in making positive lifestyle choices. This role focuses on helping clients establish strengths-based recovery objectives and offers guidance on maintaining personal wellness and recovery.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

The Peer Support Specialist will engage in a variety of essential tasks, including but not limited to:

  • Facilitating educational and support sessions utilizing effective recovery and resilience strategies.
  • Delivering educational and support services in both individual and group formats as directed.
  • Implementing evidence-based self-management training to address chronic health conditions and enhance overall well-being.
  • Planning and conducting educational, supportive, recreational, or social activities tailored to the needs of service recipients.
  • Assisting clients in formulating recovery goals and identifying actionable steps to achieve those goals.
  • Employing Motivational Interviewing techniques to enhance service delivery.
  • Recognizing barriers clients face in accessing health services and aiding them in developing strategies to overcome these challenges.
  • Guiding clients through the healthcare system effectively.
  • Providing transportation assistance for clients to attend program-related activities as needed.
  • Maintaining professional relationships with clients and staff while upholding appropriate interpersonal boundaries.
  • Referring clients to relevant staff for issues beyond the scope of peer services.
  • Delivering services in a manner that is educational, supportive, and hopeful.
  • Ensuring safety within the program environment.
  • Keeping accurate and timely records of services and programs as mandated by state regulations and agency policies.
  • Participating in scheduled supervision meetings and attending additional meetings and training as required.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY ROLE

This position does not entail supervisory responsibilities.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • A High School diploma or equivalent GED is required; an Associate Degree in a related field is preferred.

Applicants must self-identify as current or former consumers of mental health services, defined as individuals who have experienced a diagnosable mental, behavioral, or emotional disorder that has significantly impacted their daily functioning.
