Reports to: Clinical Director/Clinical Supervisor/Director of Substance Abuse

Overview:

The Counselor position is pivotal in managing all facets of a patient's therapeutic journey. This role is accountable for ensuring seamless coordination and continuity of care from the moment of admission through to discharge and follow-up. The Counselor also plays a crucial role in enhancing service delivery and performance improvement by offering comprehensive psychological therapy aimed at addressing the underlying causes and impacts of addiction. This includes providing substance abuse counseling for designated patients, as well as facilitating family and group therapy sessions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Complete essential documentation such as patient databases, treatment plans, progress notes, and discharge summaries in compliance with relevant federal and state regulations and agency policies.
  • Orient patients regarding program objectives, requirements, rules, and patient rights to facilitate their adjustment to the treatment process.
  • Conduct assessments to ensure patients are appropriately placed within treatment phases according to established standards.
  • Maintain up-to-date clinical documentation and patient records in line with organizational policies.
  • Provide crisis counseling by identifying resources and coping strategies to assist patients in managing crises.
  • Engage with patients who may be resistant to program requirements to raise awareness of the implications of noncompliance.
  • Facilitate referrals to community resources and agencies as necessary.
  • Conduct treatment plan evaluations and participate in case conferences and reviews as per established protocols.
  • Enhance knowledge of federal, state, and agency regulations concerning confidentiality and substance abuse counseling certification.
  • Prepare and submit all internal and external communications to supervisors for review.
  • Conduct patient intakes and lead group counseling sessions.
  • Oversee the collection and testing of drug screenings while adhering to proper procedures.
  • Gather necessary documentation from patients to ensure compliance with established policies.
  • Compile and submit monthly and quarterly statistical reports to supervisors.
  • Attend team meetings and complete required training in a timely manner.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

California Specific Requirements:

  • Possess an associate degree or equivalent counselor certification necessary for providing counseling services.
  • Maintain compliance with continuing education requirements as determined by relevant regulatory agencies.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and skills related to patient evaluation, treatment planning, and counseling services.
  • Complete initial training as a counselor trainee.
  • Possess counselor registration/certification from a recognized certifying organization.
