POSITION SUMMARY:

The Substance Abuse Prevention Training Coordinator plays a crucial role in enhancing the outreach efforts aimed at recruiting men who have sex with men (MSM) utilizing methamphetamine into APLA Health & Wellness' specialized programs. This position is pivotal in executing educational initiatives focused on harm reduction strategies for individuals grappling with crystal methamphetamine use.

The Coordinator ensures that all program activities align with APLA Health & Wellness' overarching harm reduction philosophy and health education objectives.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Engage and recruit target populations into group interventions that emphasize harm reduction related to substance use and prevention of HIV and STDs.

2. Implement contingency management strategies, which encompass participant recruitment through outreach, monitoring of urine sample collections, documenting test results, distributing incentives, and ensuring participant retention throughout the intervention.

3. Develop and facilitate both in-person and virtual workshops aimed at educating the target demographic and organizations on the implications of crystal methamphetamine use.

4. Maintain and update data for the Referral Network, connecting target populations and community stakeholders with essential services including HIV testing, STD treatment, substance abuse interventions, and mental health resources.

5. Collaborate with community partners to establish a comprehensive network of care that includes mental health professionals, substance abuse counselors, and treatment facilities, enhancing the support available to individuals using crystal methamphetamine.

6. Oversee the creation and distribution of promotional materials to effectively market program activities.

7. Manage the program's visibility across social media platforms, ensuring consistent engagement and outreach.

8. Contribute to knowledge sharing by preparing abstracts for professional presentations and participating in community forums.

9. Ensure that services provided are culturally and linguistically appropriate.

10. Supervise volunteers and peer health educators as required.

11. Attend community meetings as necessary and prepare reports as assigned.


QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience: An Associate's degree in a relevant field or a minimum of one year of experience working with diverse populations, particularly African American and Latino MSM and transgender individuals facing substance use challenges. Experience in outreach, community engagement, and educational training is essential. Familiarity with harm reduction strategies and experience in a nonprofit setting are preferred.

Knowledge: Understanding of health disparities related to HIV and STD transmission, harm reduction principles, behavior modification theories, and the social concerns affecting diverse populations.

Skills: Ability to work independently and collaboratively with a diverse range of stakeholders, manage multiple deadlines, and maintain confidentiality while responding sensitively to social inequities.


WORKING CONDITIONS:

This role primarily involves office work with occasional physical activity, including lifting materials weighing up to 25 pounds. Daily use of a personal computer is required for data entry and management.


ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

A valid California driver's license and proof of auto liability insurance are necessary, along with access to a personal vehicle for work-related tasks. Compliance with COVID-19 vaccination requirements is mandatory.
