GENERAL SUMMARY:

As a Breast Imaging Specialist, you will operate under the guidance of a technical supervisor, performing breast imaging procedures with a high level of expertise and minimal supervision. Your role will involve a variety of technical tasks that require independent judgment and innovative thinking to apply ionizing radiation for breast imaging diagnostics.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Conduct patient transport, transfer, immobilization, and positioning.
- Calculate and select appropriate technical factors; operate imaging equipment; process films through automatic processing; ensure proper identification of films with patient information and relevant markers to achieve high-quality diagnostic radiographs.
- Provide radiation safety in accordance with established standards; assist physicians with contrast media administration, maintain sterile techniques, and perform first aid as necessary.
- Instruct and support Radiologic Technology students in mammographic procedures, sterile techniques, and supply management in imaging rooms.
- Engage in research and Quality Improvement initiatives.
- Utilize the Radiology Information System (RIS) to maintain accurate patient data, including scheduling and tracking responsibilities.
- Ensure cleanliness and organization of assigned areas.
- Rotate within the department as required, fostering a collaborative environment.
- Clearly explain procedures to patients, considering their physical and emotional needs while upholding ethical standards, including patient confidentiality and professional conduct.
- Participate in staff meetings and in-service training, maintaining continuing education units (CEUs) in compliance with Massachusetts State licensure and A.R.R.T. requirements.
- Orient new technologists to mammographic procedures and departmental policies.
- Report equipment malfunctions and required repairs to appropriate personnel.
- Collect and stock supplies from designated storage areas to maintain adequate inventory for assigned locations.
- Exercise independent judgment and initiative in various situations without constant oversight.
- Perform additional related duties as necessary, including reception, Film Library, and escort functions.
- Conduct quality control tests to adhere to all mammography regulations.
- Execute all aspects of breast imaging, including mammography, ultrasound, wire localizations, ductograms, cyst aspirations, and core biopsies, including stereotactic and ultrasound-guided procedures.

QUALIFICATIONS:

- Graduation from an accredited Radiologic Technology program.
- Possession of a valid Massachusetts license as a Radiologic Technologist in Radiography.
- A valid Massachusetts license in mammography is required in addition to radiography.
- Registration with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists or equivalent is necessary.
- 2-3 years of experience as a Radiologic Technologist.
- Familiarity with quality control tests and compliance with MQSA, ARC, and Massachusetts State mammography regulations.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

- Proficient in operating various x-ray and related equipment.
- Strong interpersonal skills to effectively interact with patients and colleagues under stress.
- Ability to read and interpret requisition forms and comprehend complex information.
- Capacity to exercise independent judgment in diverse situations without constant supervision.
- Effective communication skills to transfer knowledge and skills to students and new staff.
- Comprehensive understanding of computer operations related to Digital Imaging, Radiology Information Systems, and hospital information systems that integrate with the Radiology Department.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

- Flexibility to work overtime, holidays, and weekends as needed.
- Work environment includes a large open area in Mammography, which may be noisy and subject to temperature and humidity variations.
- Minimal exposure to ionizing radiation when adhering to safety protocols.
- Continuous standing and lifting may be required.
- Potential exposure to human waste and disease.
- Ability to manage stress from interactions with a diverse range of hospital staff, patients, and families.
