Division Chair for Cardiothoracic Surgery

The Virginia Commonwealth University and VCU Health System are seeking a highly qualified individual to serve as the Division Chair for Cardiothoracic Surgery. This key leadership role within the department and Pauley Heart Center will play a crucial part in the growth and development of the division. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing a growing cardiothoracic multi-disciplinary practice at multiple locations and will also be responsible for mentoring junior faculty. Additionally, this position will support the division in teaching responsibilities at the VCU Medical Center and will further drive the growth of research within the division and department.

Key Responsibilities:

Administrative:
  • Management of the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery
  • Mentoring junior faculty
  • Philanthropy and development

Clinical:
  • Care of cardiothoracic patients on the MCV campus of VCU
  • Development of an active surgical practice

Teaching:
  • Teaching responsibilities for CT surgery fellows, general surgery residents, medical and undergraduate students
  • Mentoring cardiothoracic fellows with graded surgery responsibilities

Research:
  • Establishing clinical research projects with medical students and residents
  • Exploring opportunities for intramural and extramural funding

Service:
  • Serving on departmental, College, and/or University committees
  • Participating in professional capacity in their field

Required Qualifications:
Board certified or board eligible in thoracic surgery
Virginia state licensure and DEA
Excellent interpersonal skills with high emotional intelligence
Ability to function in a complex matrixed environment
Effective skills in managing conflict
Commitment to clinical excellence, education and clinical research
Knowledge of thoracic transplantation
Ability to develop and grow the clinical programs
Comfortable with development and philanthropic activities
Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment
